one button, two switches
« on: May 30, 2003, 02:14:37 pm »
I finally added my trackball, but I don't want to add a separate mouse button or two.  What kind of resistor/diode/thingy do I need to add so that one button can be wired in parallel to trigger both a Keywiz switch, and a mouse button?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't come up with the right combo to find hits on the search engine.

Thanks,
Wade

I don't think you'd want a diode.... cause you DO want the key stroke and mouse click both to occur from a single button.

You'll probably better off installing a slide switch on the side of the control panel.... to switch between the button sending a keystroke or a mouse click; on GUI navigation might get screwed up (like if the keystroke generated is CTRL, Alt, or Shift).
Mucal invader, is there no end to your oozing?!

Why not just mount the buttons in the configuration you want, choose 2 to be used as mouse buttons and then DON'T hook those 2 up to the I-Pac/Keywiz, just connect them to the "mouse". Then program mame or what have you to accept mouse clicks instead of keystrokes for those action buttons?

This will work.  And if it it enough for you great :)

I wires a switch to switch player 1 buttons 1 and 2 to the mouse hack and the ipac.  I did this because I map player 1 button 1 to enter which is very useful, especially for PC games.  The majority of the time the buttons are on mouse.  I have the mouse buttons mapped in mame for that.

Here's the dpdt relay I used (part number is on it, from digikey.com).

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I don't want to use a switch because I want my cab to stay as easy to use as possible, for people who don't know all the ins and outs of it.

Also, I was planning to use buttons 5 and 6 of player one.  Or, if I use the mouse click in the "Input (all games)" for buttons 5 and 6, will that be the only change I need to make?  I don't want to have to make changes to all the 6 button games.  I suppose this may work.  I'll try it this weekend and see how it goes.

Thanks!
Wade

Let us know how it goes, I've been meaning to try the exact same thing myself.

YEah, putting it on buttons 5 and 6 is a good idea.  Just to note.  No one has any problems with my control panel.  As I said, for mame and the majority of the time the switch is on mouse.  This covers the situations about 90% of the time.  Just a few pc games I play that need Enter as a key.

Thank you , _Iz- and Wade (and others).  I have read previous explanations of how this is done but it took another description for it to finally click.  I just wired my Player 1's 5 and 6 buttons to the mouse and directed Mame32 to handle them properly and it works wonderfully.  I am still using the keyboard for Enter.  For now.    :)
