Some great stuff here.....

My faves:

Live Album - URGH! A Music War (Soundtrack)
Awesome collection of punk / new wave bands from 1981

Rap - Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back

Rock - Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Country - Junior Brown - 12 shades of Brown

Metal - Anything by Tool

Soul/R&B - Anything by James Brown

"Alternative" (that sort of used to mean something) - Primus - Frizzle Fry

Punk - The Damned

Too many others to keep rambling.... Music Music Music!

Deadhorse - Peaceful Death & Pretty Flower

Misfits - anything circa Glen Danzig

If you like Heavy Metal, you might like Deadhorse, but I guess it qualifies as Death Metal.  If you are from Texas, you might have heard of them.

I like lots of other stuff too

Queens of the Stone Age (awesome band, check them out)

Yeah, i agree. Have you heard any of Kyuss's music. The lead singer of QTSA was the guitarist. Their albums are pretty cheap now.
A also like Metallica, Nirvana, Red hot Chilli Peppers, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The clash, Black Sabbath....

Yep. I was a Kyuss fan before QOTSA existed! I saw Kyuss 10 years ago with Glenn Danzig and White Zombie on Halloween Night! I got there in a funeral limo with some friends. great show.

Anyway, Kyuss rocks...QOTSA even better, for todays music scene.

I listen to classical and opera a lot, cranberries, pink floyd, and yes Enya (she's got great bass).  I dig 80's compliations, too.  Not a big fan of rap or death metal music, but I like the beastie boys.  If I have people over I put in some pietasters or something, but I don't listen to ska daily.

Ah...so i am not the only one around here listining mostly to classical music then  :) Although i listen much more to the "atonal" modern  classical stuff...i do listen also a lot to "tonal" classical...especially beethoven's late string quartets...and yes i admit I also love opera a lot... 8)

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robot

Last year I went and saw a Cake concert and one of bands there were The Flaming Lips.  They put on one strange show, I thought they sucked, it seemed like the show geared around enhancing the effects of drugs, which I do not endulge in.  When I got home I noticed that they were on the top of Rolling Stone's college radio play list, and CD bought in college towns.  So I guess that they are big for the college age people.

Though I am probably not a good judge of music, all I listen to is Sublime, Cake, a little Beck, and more Sublime.

I have never seen them in concert, do not indulge drugs
and think that most of their other cd's suck.  I really like the robot one though.

I also like cake, sublime and beck!

Good bands!

wow everyone here likes rock ...
me, I'm trance, dance, techno, in that order.  Bemani music is near the top of my list; if it's not the quality production (it isn't too high quality) it's the memories of playing the games and doing something to the music.  Paul Oakenfold is good.
I do like a couple other styles, though.  John Reuben is my favorite for hip hop, and All Star United is my favorite for rock.  They both can be funny and not take their music all that seriously, and they don't cuss up a storm either.
There is SO a spoon.

Hooded_paladin: I'm new to the trance scene but it's pretty cool - you have any recommendations?

Actually if anyone has some good reccomendations that'd be cool.
Thanks :)

I wouldn't call myself a trance scener (my current definition of trance is softer techno, however accurate that is)

I would recommend Paul Oakenfold.  His song "Starry Eyed Surprise" is popular, it's kind of house/hiphoppy as well as trance.  Not exactly my favorite, but his most popular song, maybe.  But I really like a specific recording of him DJing for an hour; search for "Paul Oakenfold Live In Shanghai" or something along those lines.

If you don't mind being into bemani you'd like the techno and trance songs from beatmania iidx.  But that's just mostly my thing.

*edit*  changed my mind ... live in shanghai is way more Dance than TRance, but has some good trancier parts to it.  Other paul oakenfold tracks are good.

I like all kinds of odd music. Mostly psychedelic - goa trance, ambient and older techno. I also like Pixies, Joe Satriani, The Doors, Depeche Mode, New Order and Sarah McLachlan.

Sometimes, late late at night I play the Queen Flash Gordon soundtrack at full blast followed by Chipmunk Punk.

My current english favorites - which I guess I'd define by 'most listened to' would be:

The Beautiful South (formerly known as The Housemartins), U2, Jude, Biscuit Boy (formerly known as The Beautiful South)

Favorite spanish (the evolution of accoustic bagagge left over from my years abroad) would be:

Enanitos Verdes (not unlike U2 or maybe REM...lots of nostalgic lyrics and melancholy guitar chords)

Here's my favorites (in no particular order):

Billy Joel - Glass Houses
Devo - Duty Now for the Future
They Might Be Giants - Then: The Early Years (actually a combo of their first two - and best - albums plus the B-Sides from Misc. T and demos, etc.)
Junior Senior - D-D-Don't Don't Stop the Beat
Rush - Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves (can't really decide between the two - so I'll put em both down)
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Adam & the Ants - Dirk Wears White Sox
The Human League - Dare (stop giggling)
XTC - English Settlement
Radiohead - OK Computer
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Klark Kent - Collected Works (Klark Kent is Stewart Copeland from the Police -- much better solo material than Sting IMO)
King Missle - Happy Hour
The Beatles - Revolver
The Cars (self titled)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

- etal   Those are some of my favs.  -- I'm sure there's more I'm leaving out.

Short list:

All time favorite is Failure - plus many of their offshoots when they broke up (On, Year of the Rabbit, Blinker the Star, Replicants)

The Appleseed Cast (all of their albums)
Radiohead (anything)
Portishead (anything)
Mineral - The Power of Failing
Tool - Undertow
God Lives Underwater - Life in the So Called Space Age

Someone mentioned The Faint.  I really like their newest album, but their older stuff just slightly gets on my nerves.
