mala and trackball/spinner scrolling
« on: April 27, 2008, 02:46:56 am »
I have a terrible combination of extreme sensitivity and slow scrolling. If I barely touch the trackball the selection changes, making it hard to land on a selection and stay there. And on the other hand, scrolling is so slow as to be painful when using it. I'm pretty sure it's slower than when scrolling by joystick, but it certainly doesn't help that it takes a lot more effort to keep it scrolling when using a trackball or spinner.

I've played with the polling and acceleration settings without much luck, but then again I don't quite understand how those settings correlate to speeding up/slowing down or to sensitivity. Therefore I'm hoping someone knows right off the bat what the solution is to one or both of these problems.

(Bump)

No one has experienced this? Or does no one use their trackball or spinner to scroll through the game list? I suspect the latter for the majority of people, but I've built swappable panels, so when I have my trackball/spinner panel in, I have no joystick to use for scrolling. :(

Have you done a search, I'm sure this problem has been solved to some extent.

Not the speed (still a bit slow sometimes) but I'm sure there was a post or two resolving sensitivity

I did, and I found some posts regarding the speed, but not the sensitivity. Regarding the speed though, I didn't find anything particularly helpful. As I recall, they talked about the polling and acceleration settings, but I have played with those settings and haven't really noticed a difference. I don't understand those settings for keypresses either.

I have a layout which mimics the game launcher front end, which stretches the snapshot full screen behind the text list.  There's a place in the settings where you can disable updates of certain front end drawings until a user defined delay has been reached.  I've found that I have to disable snapshot real time update, and utilize the delay, or scrolling is super slow.  Have you unchecked snap on that menu?

This delay that I speak of, also affects the settings you place in the polling settings, or the two settings fight and make it slow again.

I've experience similar frustration, but I now have it where the joysticks seem to scroll adequately without updating snaps, trackball works, but not half as well, and the spinner works also, slightly better then the trackball.

I'm personally a bit disppointed in this area myself, but haven't exhausted searches or combinations to try to help the matter.  I might try down-resing my layout smaller then 1200x1600 and see if artwork updates faster (I have an LCD, so I'm kinda stuck with that res..)

If this helps, great.  If not, then I feel ya.

I appreciate the suggestion, csa! I don't recall for sure if I have snaps set to show immediately, but I think I do. When I was initially configuring it I didn't have my trackball and spinner, and I think I found that showing immediately worked adequately with the joystick in terms of speed, but for whatever reason the trackball and spinner don't work as well. So I bet that's the problem.

The only reason I have snaps showing at all is because I used the old emu movies torrent which only included A-S games. Now that the emu movies collection is complete I may just drop snaps altogether, and of course avi's definitely need a delay.

Who knows, with mala development starting back up maybe we'll see some improvements in this area.

Well I checked my snaps, and I do have them on a delay. But guess what? For some bizarre reason I have the avi's set to no delay! :o Problem solved! Thanks guys.

I'm not blaming defaults. I'm sure I'm responsible - so it's my own prior decision making that's bizarre! ;)

Glad you found your problem, ShanMan.  I'm going to be setting up the same thing on my cabinet very soon, & I have these good threads bookmarked for when that day arrives.  Just some more info for anybody looking @ this topic:
