Why does everyone think that "maming" a box has to mean adding millions of controls, destroying original art, adding cup holders, etc?

You can put the original buttons back, put in a pc monitor in a non-destructive way, and drop in a pc and encoder, all without hurting the cabinet. Any pc will do, as you are only running the space invaders game.

I agree with Sharidan here. You can get a cheapo pc, run advancecd on it, interface it to the original controls and you're done.

Nothing wrong with a little help from modern technology.  I have 8 working machines in my gameroom.  Half of them I got empty, as conversions, or not working at all.  It would have cost a fortune to restore them to original specs, so I just put a MAME setup in there to run the original game.  Sure I love my dedicateds, which I paid good money for.  But I figured I am saving myself some money and headaches.  Plus I can still restore them to original specs in the future if I feel like it.

If you are going to emulate the game instead of using original hardware, it would be far easier to pick up a jamma harness and a 48 in 1 jamma pcb.  Space invaders is one of the games on there.  They are pretty cheap now too.

I have an empty Space Invaders which I put a 48-in-1 board in.  I made a new CP with joystick and buttons.  I was careful to keep the harness and insides intact in case some one wanted to fully restore it in the future.  Unfortunately, I don't have room for it in my collection... so it will be lent to a friend soon.

Trickiest part was to install the monitor.  Had to remove it from the frame and install the bare tube in the cabinet, then mount the chassis to a piece of plywood and reconnect to the tube.  Somewhat frustrating, but I wanted to be able to use the half-mirrored glass and the original black light and background.

Well, im in florida, so that would be a hell of a haul to get it from you (or i would).

I do agree with maming it. but i dont think even if you mamed it with the original game it would be the same. for some reason the games (to me) just dont feel the same!

I would say "Do whatever you want with it and enjoy the living hell out of it."  I mean, we're all in this horrifically addicting hobby to have fun and enjoy what we're doing, right?   ;D

I'm just gonna take a stab with this, but I'm thinking it might be a reflection. ;)

Looks to me like a reflection of the wall and possibly a fish tank, no ghost. also ghosts prefer to make silly faces for the camera.

Speaking of reflections, I was able to complete the project.  Turns out that when you use a half-silvered mirror, your image is flipped so everything looks backwards... :dunno

You can flip the image in MAME, but not on the 48-in-1 board.  Oh well, not to bad for symmetrical games like Ms Pac, but very noticeable in DK.

I believe there is something you can do with the yoke and/or wiring of the monitor to mirror the image. I'm not a monitor afficionado, so you might want to visit the monitor forum.
