Control Panel help.. kinda..
« on: April 20, 2008, 07:24:41 pm »
Well I am not what you may call skilled.. so I am going to be getting a pre-built panel from mameroom.com, Well here is the tricky part I dont like the default layout so I want to create my own based off this control panel (thanks to whoever made this design).  But I have been trying to do the layout for days now and fail at it every time and I really dont want to spend 100+ $ on something i cant get right ya know.. SO i am begging for some help plotting out the buttons please.

and here is the app they use:

What don't you like about the layout?  How did you "fail" when you started to change it? ???

Like the above poster said, what is it you dont like about it?

Otherwise it looks too much like the coveted "frankenpanel" that seems to be the norm around here (thankfully others have made these things so I know what to avoid).

I gather you want to be able to play many types of games on your future cab, so I will try to be succinct about the panel and guess about your "ideal" button layout.

1. get rid of all of the admin buttons (except an esc and an enter button)

2. Get rid of the 4-way dedicated. If you do it right, an 8 way will work fine. (How many 4-ways are you planning on playing? If you say "most games" then only use 4-ways or use a switchable 4-8 way)

3. If you really want the 7 button (neogeo + SF2) layout, you may want to make an inversion (IE have the 4 neogeo buttons on bottom)

4. Buy some controls off of ultimarc or Happ and make some cardboard mockups with the controls where you may think you want them. Seriously, this is the best way to do it. That way you cant get huffy about wasting a piece of cardboard...

I'm not getting what you mean by map the buttons?  Don't you just rearrange them to your liking and send it off for production?  I might be missing something here.

Yep. Maybe the newcomer should hang around for a bit and catch some of the atmosphere here before ordering a single thing, especially somthing like a control panel...
