What is your arcade cab's theme tune?
« on: May 28, 2003, 10:19:23 am »
I was just wondering if any of your mame cabs have a theme tune. Meaning a song from the 80's which reminds you of playing arcade games and goes hand in hand with playing it.

Do you mean a song that plays when your cab boots up, or just "a song that takes you back" in general?

There are no songs specifically that remind me of my arcade days.......any songs from the period qualify.
The early 80's was a freakin boomtime to be a kid.  You had arcades, you had the birth of MTV (that really changed things), you had the debut of HUGE toy lines with 1/2 hour commercials (cartoons) to get you to buy them, and you had the birth of the "electronic 80's".....walkmans....home computers.....etc.

If you mean in your cabinet, well, my PC boots up with a commodore 64 startup screen and fires of a custom wav I hacked together from BERZERK......That pretty much gets me in the right place ;)

HMMM..question...Do any of the front-ends allow you to play an MP3 file during menu selection that not only fades out when you start your game, but fades IN when you end it?

I'm still working on my cabinet and FE but so far I'm launching the smaller 80's arcade movie (forgot who put that together) in a flash with first 30 sec or so of Empire by Queen's Riche.... Way Cool....

Then the shutdown is a mix of the old GAME OVER in Missle Command and the Bezzerk sound of "Stop the Humanoid" and then a Cylon (remember Battle Star Gallatica) reply with "By Your Command"...... I feel 13 again.... WOW ! ;D

I have yet to post pictures of my cabinet ... I will get around to it once I work out how my ISP's hosting works.  However ... my theme tune/start-up music is the theme song to SUPERMAN the movie.  My cabinet is called SUPERMAME ... hence the music.  Soon I will get the pics up.

The best song relating to that era was a song called Computer Games by Mi-Sex, I think they were a New Zealand band that moved to Australia so I'm not sure if that song made the charts in USA or UK. Definately worth downloading it if you can. On the Video Clip it showed some footage from the Star Wars arcade game and a black and white driving game my guess is it was probably Datsun 280 Zzzap or something similar. ;D

You could always go with "DO YOU COMPUTE?" by..err...some dork.  80's song that I think barely charted in the US....saw the video on a VH1 flashback not too long ago and was horrified to see the dude who sings it...imagine "So nerdy there's no way this band could have survived".

Personally, anything by DEVO takes me back to the early 80's.........to me DEVO is the early 80's....

Hey ... no fair bashing Donnie Iris.  Sure, he looked like a nerd, but that Pittsburgh native could ROCK.  His signature song, "Ah Leah!", back around 1981, is one of the classics of FM rock stations.  He also did "Love Is Like a Rock" which made it into the top 40.  "Do You Compute" was around 1984, and was a rocking song as well.  He was originally with the Jaggerz in the early 70's, who had a hit with "The Rapper".  I think Donnie Iris still sells out at concerts at local clubs in the Pittsburgh area.

Oh, for the cabinet bootup song, just pick a classic arcade theme song, such as Pac Man or Donkey Kong.  You can't go wrong.  Maybe alternate from time to time.  My kid hears the theme and comes running every time.

When my cab starts up it plays the Pac-Man start sound, and shutdown is Donkey Kong when
Mario "dies".  I also loop custom made ambient arcade noise in AdvanceMame.  As for songs
that remind me of video games I'd have to say any Journey or Rush.  :)  Funspot is a great place
to listen to 80s music and play classic vids!!

Donnie Iris, Thank you!

I had no idea he was the guy who did AH LEAH....live and learn!

Yeah, Do yoU Compute is a pretty good song, or rather a very good example of the cheezy early 80's electronica revolution!

And..I think makes a good arcade song.....the video shows him pluggin away at an Atari 800 I think, might even be a 1200.....and DO YOU COMPUTE is scrolling around the screen..
Ok oldschoolers, does this look familiar?

Aphex Twin... lol.  Every time I go party at this certain friend's house, once we're good and drunk I always have him play his Windowlicker video.  That thing is the freakiest video evar.  Someday I will see it sober, but damn... those morning after memories are freaky.

When i have myone, maybe i put something like a jukebox with 80's (metal, punk some pop, electronic), 90's (same) and nowadays music!

For intro sound, maybe a Europe - Final Countdown sample!  ;D

I'm 18 and i didn't lived the 80's but i think that music kicks a**!   \m/

My cabinet has a Discs of Tron theme, so i use the theme music from Tron.  Then, i have an all-80's jukebox as the first item on my frontend, so it's easy to hear plenty of 80's music on-demand.

for some reason everytime I used to go into the local arcade in the 80's, I always heard Loverboy - Workin' for the Weekend. It just sorta grows on ya. Has the classic 80's sound all the way. Also Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane always seemed to fit the bill. YMMV

I looked around a lot, and finally setlled for Tears For Fears.  There are a bunch of tff songs out there that take me back 20 years.  Very effective.   Take for example  'Everybody Wants to Rule The World".

Oh, Duran Duran also works for me.
"3 warps to Uranus" -- so I stopped playing!

My cabinet is not completed yet, but on the "prototype" I alternate between:
1. "Shump Theme" from the Dreamcast homebrew game
2. "Die Another Day" from the James Bond movie
Neither actually reminds me of anything, but they make me happy, so deal with it.

Styx "Best of Times"

Oddly tho, I never actually heard it during the 80's. My first exposure to it was in a Mame animation and so, by association, it makes me feel all nostalgic and stuff. Go figure.

Maybe it's cuz I'm younger, but I'm going with Ministry of Sound (electronic music). Rather than being just one song that would start to get repetitive, it's a full 1.25 hour mixed set. It's not over the top, though. It doesn't get too busy. It plays in the background for my emulaxian.

Edit: Found it was looping anyways and cutting off the majority of my track so I switched to a song called "Lone Gunman" by 187 Lockdown.

Where did you get these ambient sounds?  Are they from a real arcade or fabricated?

Has anyone heard of the arcade based song by Cornellius?  I heard it years ago, and completely forgot what it sounds like, but I think it would sound really good in an arcade cab.  If anyone can tell me the name of the song, or what album its on, that would be great.
