Author Topic: Star Wars Yoke Gear Replacement (Read 6254 times)

I received my much sought after Star Wars yoke only to find it wasn't packed well and the large plastic gear on the back of the yoke is broke. The box was open on one end and 1/3rd of the gear is gone. If it had been in the box some JB Weld would have probably fixed it.

Surfing a few weeks ago I ran into someone selling gear replacements. Don't remember if it was a site or in a newsgroup. I looked some tonight and didn't find it. Does anyone know of somewhere to get a replacement or has anyone has a similar problem and come up with a solution?

Turning the controller, it only uses a part of the gear so maybe in positioning it properly things will work OK. There isn't much left of the gear on one side and it is split so I'd have to glue it for sure or it won't hold together for long.

Sorry to hear that jody,

I'd be ticked. I've seen trigger rebuild kits around, but never a complete rebuild kit for the "spur" gear. The only thing I can think of, that i've heard.. is to go to an RC car hobby shop and try to find a simliiar pitch and number of tooth gear.

I have seen those gears on ebay, but they are like 30+ $ to start with. I would really be complaining to whoever you bought it from.

I looked around a little and didn't find a match except for a gear manufacturer I found online that appears to have a match but it is a metal gear. I'll have to contact them about pricing. If it is cheap enough I'll replace both gears with metal and shouldn't have any problems. I'll get more exact dimensions and post details of what I find and let everyone know how things turn out.

On a positive note, I received my security bits today so was able to open up the yoke and inspect the inside. Everything on the inside is good. Other than the broken gear the only issue I may have would be if the pots don't work but they are easy to find.

In case anyone is interested, I got the security bits from www.jackstuff.com. Was about $10 plus $2 for shipping. Arrived in a week. Kit has 32 security bits and an extension in a small flexible plastic box shaped case. Nice...

I'll have a hard time at trying to get the number of teeth on the large gear correct as part of it is missing. Anyone with a Star Wars yoke mind counting the teeth on the large gear that controls the left / right movement (the one at the far bottom of the yoke) to post here so I get it right?

The small gear had some info. on it. Manufactured by Seitz it is 28T 24P 1.25" in diameter.

The larger gear (the one broken) doesn't say anything on it. Using technical measuring tools it is 2 9/16" outside diameter with a 1" bore. 1/4 thick. I estimate 60 teeth.

Both are spur gears.

Just counted the teeth on the larger gear of my Star Wars yoke. It is 60 tooth gear.

The following I got from a Star Wars Owners manual with an illustrated parts list.

Gears inside box of flight control assy.
Large Gear Part Number 040235-01 60-Tooth Spur Gear
Small Gear Part Number 040249-01 14-Tooth Spur Gear

Gears on Shaft coming out the back of control assy.
Large Gear Part Number 040235-01 60-Tooth Spur Gear
Small Gear Part Number 178101-003 28-Tooth Spur Gear

Part numbers are old Atari stock numbers, kind of useless unless someone is sellling NOS gears.

Not the cheapest around, but probably the closest match you will find. All aluminum, so probably the last ones you will have to buy, too.

This one will need to be rebored for .75" shaft like the original. Shouldn't be a big deal. They might be able to do it for you.

Oscar, I assume for the 60T with a .75" shaft that is the one that is inside the yoke. The 60T that is broke on mine is at the bottom of the yoke and has a 1" shaft unless there is something non-standard on it.

That piece of metal with a set screw on it that is between the big gear and your measuring caliper drops down to 1" in diameter and goes through the big gear. The gear on mine is broke and off so I'm able to see it better than one that isn't broke

. Anyway the metal 1" diameter part has lines of raised metal going perpendicular to the gear all the way around to better hold the plastic gear and prevent slippage. I would assume I'd get a 1" bore gear to slide over that part instead of replacing the entire piece of metal and set screw which would be .75" in diameter.

Yeah, sure, make me take mine apart now...

Mine doesn't appear to be built the same way you describe yours. The shaft is .75" all the way and the set screw goes right through the gear and into the shaft. Is your's a real SW yoke, or from a different game? Mine actually had a TurboSub overlay on it, but when I pulled it up, a SW overlay was underneath it.

Mine came with the metal Star Wars control panel. I think it is the same as yours. In your last pic on the upper side of the big gear there is a ring of metal inside the shaft of the gear. That is what I was referring to. It is 1" in diameter on mine. The gear itself (just the plastic part) is 1/3rd gone and the gear is off of the metal but I measured the diameter of the metal that the plastic gear goes over and found it 1". I assumed I was needing a gear with a 1" bore to push onto that metal ring. Maybe it is standard that such gears come with the inside part and the set screw and thus I'd need to match the bore of the shaft as you describe.

Looks like wmberg sells it either way. Just the gear (hubless) or the gear and set screw.

Yes, the hub is part of the gear. You can also buy a hubless gear, but if it were me I would buy the one with the integrated hub. One less thing you have to hack together.

If one of the two gears are placed with a metal gear, would it be best to replace the other one with metal too? Will a plastic gear working with a metal gear wear out the plastic gear quicker?

I would think it's safer to go all metal, but it still might be ok to mix materials. It's not like you're running machinery off them.... If the plastic wears out then you could always buy the second metal gear right?

Diameter of gear, diameter of shaft, if you want with hub or hubless, and tooth pitch.

Mine is stamped 28T 24P (pitch) manufactured by Seitz. Do you have the other measurements already?

Sure don't. I didn't see that mentioned in the manual. If you (or someone else) have the measurements, it would be a lot help to me.

Sorry it took so long. Small gear on bottom is 1.25" in diameter. I didn't measure the shaft. Assume you can do that to get the inside bore size.
