Creating a copy of a classic.

I built a mame cabinet a few years ago, I still enjoy it and my 5yr old son is really getting some use out of it. I've been thinking of starting to collect some of the old vintage cabinets like ms pac man, donkey kong, etc and then it hit me. Why don't I just build one, put dedicated mame setup in it and try like heck to duplicate the original? I saw this cabinet the other day http://picasaweb.google.com/buildamamecabinet/20thAnniversaryMsPacManGalaga and it really made me want to make a copy of it. Anyone out there done a cabinet dupe project like this? If so, post pics of how it turned out. I'm thinking of using a small linux pc with mame of course as well as a 19inch LCD mounted in the same manner as the wells gardner monitors. I've checked mamemarquees.com but cannot find Ms Pac Man art, anyone know a good source?

You might want to browse around a bit here. You'll find this pace is full of people with the exact same idea you had. The project announcements forum is for people building cabs. Lots of examples with pictures.

Welcome!  If you do a bunch of searching and check the wiki and Examples page you will find TONS of people who have built classic cabs from the ground up.  There's even a totally sick Star Wars cockpit replica out there.  It's kind of what we do around here!

So you are saying that my idea to have a CP with five players, 15 buttons and 3 joysticks each as well as 3 trackballs and 10 pinball flipper buttons is a bad idea? What ever happened to that photoshopped pic of a CP that was sorta like that?

Go for it. I did the same thing last year with my Pac-man from scratch and mini-Dragon's Lair.
It's a lot of fun. Just make sure to take your time and not rush it.
Biggest piece of advice, make sure to plan the monitor placement and mounting of your CP! This really killed me because I was so concerned about the exterior appearance and forgot to take into account the interior mounting systems.

welcome! a few guys here have made great replicas of cabs, tuilsing things like original coin doors etc they bought here and there. i myself am (slowly, oh so slowly) building a space invaders replica utilising a B & W TV i picked up.

do lots of searching around here, check the wiki and ask questions.

Sadly, our selection of beverages from your side of the world is limited here (Fosters, Castlemaine XXXX Gold and Steinlager Classic are about it).

The sales manager for the importer is my brother-in-law, who I will be seeing tonight, and I'll see if I can twist his arm a bit about Steinlager Pure -- I still haven't forgiven him for dropping quart bottles of Steinlager.

They tend to move the cabs around. First time I saw it it was free from both sides. I took pictures of the sideart to help me fill in missing details while vectorizing the Galaga sideart. Last time I was there it was left of a concrete pillar and IIRC to the right to another cab. You could see the whole of the right side, but not take pictures of it (IIRC about 10cm clearance).

By now they might have moved it again though. With some bad luck maybe even off the premesis. Everytime I go there it seems like they have less games.

best thing would be to trace the panels on a big *ss piece of paper or cardboard but i can imagine they won't like that
