Is the "Golden Tee" trackball any different?
« on: May 27, 2003, 04:52:32 pm »
Just saw the sale at Happ, and was trying to determine the difference(s) between the normal 3" trackball and the "Golden Tee" 3" trackball.  Does anyone have any insight into this one?

Two more quick questions:
1. Does "High Lip" mean that the trackball sits higher off the console surface?
2. Does anyone know how big the old Marble Madness and/or Crystal Castles trackballs were?  I'm trying to get a sense of what a 3" ball "feels like".

Thanks guys,
-Hedgehog

Not sure what you mean about the two t-balls being different, performance? Looks? Function? Main difference is the football shape of the imperial, takes up a little more room under the CP.

As for "feel" -  centipede was 2 1/4" millipede was 3", golden tee is 3" missile command was 4" I believe.

And regarding your last question, do a search, this was covered extensively last week. Here's the link. http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=7749;start=msg56093#msg56093

"Golden Tee" == high lip
normal == normal lip

Opti boards might be newer on the high lip, depends if the normal TBs come with the new reds or not.

AFAIK, everything else is the same.

No.  From the top of the ball to the top of the lip is the same.  Check the link above to see a drawing of differences on 1/8" lexan; if the lexan wasn't there, the high lip would have a 1/8" spacer under the mounting plate, the normal won't have the 1/8" lexan on top, and both would be the same height.

I'm sure this was covered already and I'm reposting the same question, but I couldn't find it easily... What is with these new "Red" optical boards that I keep hearding about.

Should I replace the green optical board on my 3" High Lip?
Were there major problems w/ the green board?

Thanks (sorry again if this is a repost) --

I don't notice a difference between them on gtg2 or shuffleshot (ie: no problems either way).   Tested on USB Optipac and happs USB interface, happ 3" high lip, winME, mame 0.68, default game settings.

The red boards are supposed to be "better at high and low speeds" than the green boards (according to happs).

I've heard of some people with the green boards having problems with shuffleshot & GTG2, but IIRC most use either a mouse hack or a serial optipac;  I don't remember if anyone upgrading to the reds fixed the problems.  *shrug*

If you aren't having problems, I doubt you'll notice a difference if you upgrade.  Or, if you really want to try the reds, for $25 more you could get a whole new TB with them included.   Again, *shrug*
