does anyone have advice on a cabinet?

I picked up a non-functioning display unit at a sears. All the buttons as well as the joystick is wired. I don't know much about building arcade units but I have been reading up on it and i was wondering if anyone had any advice for what i can do with it. I attached a picture so you can see exactly what I am dealing with. I would really appreciate any advice. thank you very much.

Err, I'd like to say "MAME that sucker!" but I don't know .... if you scrapped the monitor (which I'm assuming is not working), and got rid of the PCB, you'd be left with a control panel and a box, so you'd be able to start from there. At least you'd have the artwork and marquee already in place.

You might be able to re-wire the controls to an encoder to interface with a PC, for MAME purposes ...

One mildly personal question.. what did you pay for that item and what is NOT working to cause them to sell it at that price?

As to how to make it into a working machine, be it MAME or otherwise, I suggest Saint's: Project Arcade book asap.  It will give you nearly every answer you will attempt to question during your build.

Without knowing exactly what is and isn't working, and what is inside the cabinet, it's hard to say.
Is the monitor VGA?
Is the motherboard just a PC motherboard, with the necessary programs connected and autostarted via IDE?

At minimum you could replace the monitor with a PC monitor, and connect all the controls to a keyboard encoder, and insert your own PC.

Posting more pictures of exactly what you are dealing with would help.

There is nothing inside the cabinet at all, just the controls,no monitor or anything. it is a completely empty unit.

Ahhh!! well worth the investment then, that's my sort of price...... They were not great when they did have the guts inside, but the controls on them are not bad, you will want to add more buttons though.

i saw one of those units at my local sears a few weeks ago, not a bad little cabinet...a bit expensive though.  at least you got a great deal on it.  if i recall correctly, you can probably put a 19 or 20" monitor in there.   building a mame pc isnt difficult.  im sure you will do fine.

pretty cool  i would say the easiest for me was mame32 and i used glaunch for a front end (game launcher)all free downloads  but you will need more button depending on the games you put on it and for sure get some light guns for area51 and police trainer and zero point that always make and arcade fun guns gugns guns!!!!!!!! if you need roms i will be more then happy to give some i have 20 dvd's  of roms and chd's
