mouse button wiring
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:28:19 pm »
hey guys, i need some advice.  i am getting ready to build a new control panel for my cabinet, to add a spinner and trackball.  the spinner is home made, and i did a mouse hack for the trackball.  i am using an x-arcade encoder (yeah, i know...hindsight is 20/20)

anyway, here is what i am considering for my panel layout:

the two white buttons are the ones in question.. if i can't get them to work the way i would like, i guess i'll be ok without them...but i would like to have them there for use with the 4way stick, as well as the spinner and trackball.  i could wire them in parallel with player 1 buttons 1 and 2, which would work for all the games.  however i would like to have mouse buttons available for admin purposes.  if i wire them up as mouse buttons (connected to the hacked mouse interface for the trackball), they will work with the trackball games, and possibly the spinner games(i havent tried that) but not for the joystick only games.  even though the mapping is there, the mouse buttons don't work on games that don't support a mouse.  so here is my dilemma.  how should i wire these up?  can i connect them to both the x-arcade and the mouse at the same time?  i am concerned that if i do that, when the buttons is pressed the x-arcade would be connected to the mouse and could possibly cause damage.  any suggestions?

Should not cause damage if you've done your (ground) wiring right.. Missed keys & trouble controlling the mouse etc. at worst.

I wrote a script for a program that will let you use buttons as mouse controls.. Look in that thread.

you could also wire a toggle switch to swap between mouse and keyboard key.

I use a 4PDT toggle on/off switch on each of my joys so I can swap from digital to analog for my dreamcast side of the cab.

you would not need a toggle with as many as that 4PDT though
