Need suggestion for a Mame version to use to run 1-2 games
« on: April 08, 2008, 07:14:40 pm »
O.k. what I'm doing is using mame to run Tempest and Tubes only, in a
Tempest cabinet with real spinner etc. It would be way to expensive to
buy all the parts I need to make it original.
So seeing how I'm only gonna play two games with this machine it seems
like a waste to put a big powerful computer in there. I have a bunch
of older computers(Pentium II) and I'm wondering what is an older
version of mame that you guys would recommend using that would run
Tempest decent with an older computer? I believe Tempest first
appeared in mame 30 but I'm looking for the best quality I can get on
an older computer and I'm sure there were improvements after .30 that
would work best for me, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Cool idea! What are you using for a monitor? Could we see some pics?
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

First why .37 specificaly??

I'm using a 19" PC Monitor that I removed from it's case and mounted just like the stock monitor would. Try as I did I still had to cut a little out of the back door(the cage that covers the neck board sticks out the back maybe an inch). I'll have about 100.00 total into this machine when I'm done. If I had to buy a vector monitor and working tempest boardsets it would probably of cost me.....well I really don't want to think how much it would have cost me ;D   I'll post some pics as soon as I get my optic boards and minipac for the spinner hooked up and everything is working.

Well,

(BOMBJACK with a) P3 500MHz, 384Mb, etc. on DOS 6.22  -> TEMPEST 100%. Same stuff on win98se -> quite playable but still, DOS rules!

..On a P2 machine I'd go with the oldest version of MAME that Tempest plays 100% on ..I'd guess that TelcoLou knows it's the 0.37 version..? I've used 0.37b16 (0.37b1?) successfully on at least three different builds. That build "does" quite a few of the classics without too much processor power.

Actually, running DOS I'm sure you'd easily get it done even with a Pentium (1) level machine :)

My FE (in DOS): Game Launcher running MAME 0.61 ..or something.. More info on the Bombjack thread or as soon as you have questions ;)

Have fun

Just tried it using Mame37b16 on a 400mhz Celeron 256mb ram. 60fps no frameskip.

.37 is one of the early builds thats considered a benchmark. Has lots of games, but generally the older the version of MAME, the faster it is. Run a newer version on that machine, you'll see.
