Thinking of buying a non-working Donkey Kong
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:34:18 pm »
I found a used Donkey Kong machine for sale not too far from me for $200

It does not work and the owner has no idea what is wrong with it.

My questons are?

When I look at the unit, what should I look for?
and
What is the unit worth?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Hell yes. Those are small pics, but they look good from here. It could just be something loose. Even if you have to replace a few things, you still are getting what looks like a great deal.

Obviously has the gameboard and the monitor it I am assuming.

I would buy it without mentioning it is an easy fix etc....

Just say "I enjoying working on this things and fixing them up when I can".

That's what I always do anyways.

I bought a DK3 machine (converted DK) for $125 with a working monitor but non-working DK3.

Have spent quite some dough touching the sucker up.

$200 doesn't sound bad to me.

200.00 is not bad if you're assuming that it is an easy fix, which you should never do. When haggling a price, you always assume (especially in front of the seller) that you'll have to buy a new board and monitor. And, in that event you should ask him, in light of it being "DEAD" if he'll take 150.00.

If you detect he isn't that familiar with these games....say something like, "Yeah, these things are soo old now, it's common that the circuitry gets fried and your left with a box." That'll make him think that you're doing him a favor by taking it off his hands, that he's lucky he's getting anything at all for it.

I say that too... except i always work in the convo. that i am a collector and am not in it to make money out of it.  that removes the thought that i would try to get it off them cheap to turn around and sell them for profit! they always seem to like that!

How about this:  buy it, and sell me the marquee and CPO...that way mine will be complete!

Show him pictures of the thousands of arcade cabs that fill up landfills, and say that he has a moral imperative to give it to you, as to prevent the increase in trash volume, and thus the facilitation of global warming.... :dunno

Find yourself a picture of the full inner workings of a Donkey Kong on the 'net. Better yet, someone just post one here that has it.

Make sure that everything you see in the pic is in the machine you are buying.

If this is the one that was on the Plano craigslist.

I am sure it is already gone.  No need for discussion.
