I was just about to pull the trigger (pun intended) on two cheap Guncon2 guns but I'm now reading that it doesn't have "continuous tracking" and it also flashes the entire screen whenever you shoot.

What is "continuous tracking" and does it really flash the entire screen whenever you shoot?

I don't think I can deal with the screen constantly flashing espicially I'm firing several times in a row...

Please tell me it doesn't flash the screen :)

I know that when using the Guncon2 Driver with the EMS TopGun LCD units, you don't get flashing unless you want it. Also, flashing doesn't work at all on my Windows 2000 machine.

Also, flashing doesn't happen on top of a game unless the game is programmed to.

Thanks for the reply...

So are you saying that flashing the screen is actually a feature?

It seems like a big disadvantage (and annoying) to me.  Also, it RetroBlast's review they list a "Pro" for the EMS TopGun is that it has no screen flash.

Can anybody else confirm that PS2 GunCon2 guns DO NOT flash the screen unless you want them to?

Confirmed with http://www.guncon2driver.com/

Its a feature of the software. But It may also be required by some games.  I have it turned off with no problems so far.

2nd player gun does not show its location on the screen when moving around with the gun- you need to turn off the target or that target will 'stick' in the last place that it was fired...that maybe your  'continuous tracking' issue.

Do you know if the original Nameco Guncon2's work with either drive?

From what I've learned, there are two Guncon2 drivers but neither has been updated in about two years.  Both of them seem to suggest that the original Guncon2 doesn't work.

Is this true?

How do I know if a specific Guncon2 is compatible?

Original guns are compatible and are reviewed in a thread here:

I purchased the cheapest, most generic guncon2's I could find on ebay to test them out and they worked:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PlayStation-2-PS2-Light-Gun-Shooting-GunCon-GunCon2-NEW_W0QQitemZ300211674579QQihZ020QQcategoryZ21188QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

...so there is a good chance that most any branded gun will work.

Ahhh, thanks.  These are exactly the ones I was looking to purchase so I'm very glad to hear that you purchased the same ones and they worked!

I guess I'll spend the $30 (two guns plus shipping) and try it out.

I was actually really interested in the Topgun LCD guns but after seeing the price ($100 minimum for two) and the fact that you need to stand FAR from the display device, I'm not really that interested anymore.

I'm also halfway decently interested in the new ActLabs guns but they cost around $200 for two guns (insane) and if the Guncon2 will work just as good then I'll save a boatload of money!

Guys just to clarify those 10$ guns work with mame?  What else other than the software do you need?

One more question... does the Guncon2 work using component cables?

yes the $10 guns do work in MAME.  I did very little calibration for them to work out of the box.

sofa -It is a standard composite (RCA video feed) used.  The guns come with a ps2 and yellow dual sided male/female RCA cable attachment - the yellow cable needs to be connected to the tv on one side and to the cable coming from your video card on the otherside.  my video card has s-video out so I needed an s-video to RCA adaptor which I got a cablesforless.com for a couple bucks.  I am not sure about component inputs as I do not know how the signal is divided there.

In the 46 page thread on here somebody mentioned using the green RCA cable but they said they couldn't calibrate it but it seemed like it was a driver problem and not a cable problem.  I don't see any further responses about it working or not...

The green cable ("Y") carries Luma/Brightness so maybe it will work just using that?
