Author Topic: Ms Pac monitor 'gaussed'??? (Read 5477 times)

Hi all-
I saw this post elsewhere, though it's contents did not rectify my situation.
I just replaced the monitor in a Ms Pac-Man cocktail with a brand new vision pro from Happ.
It has gauss discoloration on the lower right & upper right corners. I was told to power cycle the machine sevaral times and the degaussing coil would fix the problem. It has not, and idea as to what I should try next? Moving the machine all around the house just seems ridiculous, and doesnt ever get rid of the problem completely anyway. The machine is 100% factory original, no aftermarket speakers or anything...HALP!

You'll need a manual degauss wand.

well hopefully either you degauss coil is not plugged in or your ptc component is dead

I'd sooner say the built in coil doesn't have enough oomph to correct the colors properly. Especially since it's a new monitor and you've rotated it 90 degrees.

This being brand new out of the carton, I would hope that isnt the case.....or do I?

Sheesh, even if I had a degauss wand, I dont know how to do the 'degauss dance'!

manual degauss wands are very cheap to buy,all you do is hold it close to the tube then activate it whilst making circular actions steadily getting larger and further away from the tube

Is there a chance I can screw things up worse? At this point I'll be 170$ into replacing the monitor in this thing.

How fast are you trying to turn it off and on? I think it needs to stay off for a while before turning it back on for the degaus to function? Nothing wrong with buying a degaus wand, but you may find if you are patient, after a few days of cycling the power off and on maybe once or twice a day, the problem will go away. I found that to be the case when I moved my pac man cocktail recently. It looked good again on the third day. I own a wand but didn't bother using it.

rough handling in shipping can cause problems . a warped shadow mask for one .
suggest advising the shipper of the situation - just in case ....
repeated manual deguassing may eventually clear it, provided no internal crt damage.

I still have a G07 in my Ms Pac cocktail, never got around to rewiring the degauss coil (anyone have a diagram for that? please PM if you do...) It takes three or four power cycles with a couple minute interval to fully degauss.

The built-in automatic degausser in all tv sets and monitors is not very strong. Also, it only works when the set or monitor has been turned off for 30 minutes at least.

Yes there are times when even a brand new monitor will need to be manually degaussed with a handheld degausser coil.

Thanks Ken, I guess that sinches it. I spoke to a friend who is bringing a manual degaussing wand over on Saturday. I hope I dont screw up. Cheers everyone.

OK, this is getting wierd.
So a friend brought over a degaussing coil.
Used it on the machine.
nothing changed.

We moved it to another section of the house.
The areas that were discolored before became correct, and OTHER areas became discolored. We used the coil again. Nothing changed. Am I just doomed here? There's a Donkey Kong cocktail sitting right next to it, and it had no gauss at all.

What the hell is going on here?

maybe you have a magnetised frame bolt or your transformer is a bit close to the monitor

Couple of things, probably already in the thread, but to degauss start at the center of the tube, with the degausser on.. circular motion from the center and work towards the outsise of the tube - all this say about 6 inches from the tube... now still with power on pull the hand degausser nack about 6 feet.. now power off.

My guess still bad.

This is because when the monitor was made it was built as if it was a horizontal monitor, you have turend it vertical... pull the monitor and position it in a noarmal horizontal direction - if possible tube should face east. Now degauss it.. my guess is ok. If not the tube was aligned in a magentic field such as china.. huge difference in magnetic fields.

When i posted this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=78754.0 i thought i was the only one with that problem,my solution is moving the game to the center of the room and the colors look right, hope someone will come with a fix for this one.

Then, I moved to a new house. And it stopped.

No from the sounds of it you will not get it to go away.

The monitor was aligned/adjusted in it's normal upright orientation, now you have turned it on it's back. Huge difference in magnetic fields. This is compounded when facing Nort or South.

It cab be fixed by adjsuting the first 2 "rings" on the neck of the tube. You would have to break the seal on the rings, sometimes paint, some times hot melt.

Mark the current settings of all rings with a white china marker or pencil crayon. Chances are you will have to rotate those first 2 rings as a pair (Maintain their spacings) slightly clockwise.

Another way is to add magnets to the bell of the tube in the corners taht are bad. Problem is you will not have the magnets.

Could be that the house has wire run through metal conduit or just alot of not well shielded wire in the wall and it is causeing a EM field in that house. That would be why when the this was moved it changed the part of the screen affected. Thats also why when you took it out of the house that it worked fine.

It's not the same one. It does seem to have a similar problem though.
