You can be looking at around $900 to $1500.... just to ship a cab US to Europe and way more than that in the other direction. That price is for ground shipping taking a couple of months. I'd hate to think what the air freight cost would be.

You'd only be looking at around $5000 to ship an entire container. If you filled that up with cabs, say 30 or more then the cost is quite small.

Customs.... Difficult to say without knowing where it's going to and where it's from. Also depends on the actual value of the item.

All of the above is subject to obtaining quotes.... If you really want to know an accurate cost, then you need to ring around the freight shippers and customs agents. You will get a variety of prices for basically the same service.

Nah its not that much.

To send a Pinball machine from USA to New Zealand is approx $500USD. From Germany to NZ is approx $600US . There is always extras at the receivers end with clearance fees etc. BTW that Air Freight.

To send a pallet from Taiwan to New Zealand cost $230USD. That is up to a cubic metre. ( a midway cocktail is approx .8 cu mt).

Its not that bad really, especially if its a machine you really want.

Fozz, don't know where you got those prices from, but those are way off. I once investigated to get a load of drums (musical instruments) from the US to Europe and a dedicated 20' container would have cost me about €1700,- to ship. I would have to unload it at the harbor myself.

I'll ask a friend who had a SW cockpit and also a SW upright shipped from US to Europe what he paid.

I wonder if there would be a need to pay customs for a 25 year old arcade game, but I'm not sure.

Mmmm, well maybe Fozz wasn't that much off on the "one piece" shipping:

The price of shipping the cockpit is mentioned on his site:
Palletizing , Shipping , Handling and insurance : $1650.87

Found that info here: (lots of pics of how it was packed and crated):

http://www.gameroom.be/viewtopic.php?t=10&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

No price on the upright. That one came from Canada by the way.

Now, he won that cockpit on e-bay for about $1500,-(WG 6100 "installed" (read: smacked-in) if I remember correctly. Then that shipping costs. Then it arrives and works.
For one day.
And then dies.

I can only imagine how I would have felt.

I'm currently working on both machines to get them back to full glory again :)

With sea-freight shipping you need to be very careful. If you get a quote to ship, say, a 2 cubic metre crate from the US to UK, from a US shipper, they will likely quote the cost of getting it into a container and the actual shipping. This is relatively cheap. What they will not tell you is what happens when you receive the "notice of arrival" in the UK.
This will come with an itemised bill for approx 10 different charges, such as Customs Clearance, Duty Deferment, Port Security Levy (!) etc etc, many of which you will not understand. Some of these charges will be high because the agent will know you are not accustomed to importing and will double or triple the charge.
The total cost of all these charges will be higher than the original shipping cost.
As Fozzy mentioned, you get hit because most of these charges are the same for a crate as one full container.
I would agree with the costs Fozzy mentioned, as totals. It might be possible to save some of the cost by driving to the port at the right time rather than getting them to deliver it but the chances of a wasted journey are high as goods can mysteriously get lost for a couple of days or delayed for some reason. If they have to store stuff they will charge storage fees so you cant win.

I wonder how much UPS charges for a pallet. Or Fedex, Dhl or any of the common carriers.

you mean an empty cab?
or an actual kit you had to assemble?
and it wasn't a bar top or something?

I think Andy's right. The price I mentioned for that 20' container was calculated by a family member who actually works in the transport business and does these things all the time. So, at least, he would be fair with all those charges etc.

There is also this to remember: due to the low dollar and the crazy oil prices, a lot of shipping companies are in a lot of trouble on this side of the pond.

crapppp

well then i guess i'm stuck with either building a cab from scratch, restoring one or having a disassembled cab or kit shipped ($130 according to jotto)
