Bartop Control Panel Advice Needed
« on: March 29, 2008, 07:10:59 pm »
I'm in the process of designing my CP for my bartop arcade cabinet.
The width of the CP will be 18.3125" and the height will be 7.25"

I'm only adding one joystick, but I will be adding a full-sized 3" happs trackball in the center.
The hole to the upper-left of the trackball is the spinner. All admin buttons will be on the base/side. Thus, the actual CP includes:

1 Mag-Stik Plus
1 Happs Trackball 3"
6 Player Buttons
1 TurboTwist 2 Spinner w/TokenTop BYOAC token

The strange thing is that it almost feels more natural to have the joystick on the right and the buttons on the left, but I'm not left-handed. But no one seems to do this. Hmmm...

The layout sample I've made below seems to work well, but I'm a newbie at this and any feedback from some CP designing veterans is always appreciated, thanks.

Mock it up in cardboard and try it.  See if you like it.  You will have to live with it.

Don't really know if I like it.
Specifically the placement of the spinner.

Also, were there any games that had the joystick on the RIGHT and the buttons on the LEFT?
Again, I'm not a lefty but it seems somewhat natural in a way.

Just looking for any input, thanks.

Seems a little cramped to me. I'm not a big fan of putting trackballs on bartops. What about getting rid of the trackball and centering the joystick with buttons on either side? That would free up quite a bit of space and solve your left-handed/right-handed dilemma:
