8 way Super vs Rotary - anyone compare?
« on: May 25, 2003, 08:05:02 pm »
I recall seeing the writeup somewhere saying that the Happ rotary is basically a Super with the rotary mechanism added...I was wondering how accurate that comparison is?

All I have from Happ is the Rotary joystick and I've been finding it somewhat sensitive maybe, even as an 8 way, just the way an 8 way is too sensitive for  4 way use.

When trying to play Contra (8 way shooting horizontal scrolling) with the Rotary, I am finding it hard to get the directions to properly register for me.  I end up catching a diagonal when I want to just aim Up, etc.

When trying Double Dragon, I'm all over the place - good luck head butting (staright left/right repeated pressing).

Should I expect that from a Super as well?

I have a feeling I'll end up going to Starburst and buying a Super, Competition, and doing my own comparison.

The rotary is doing fine in the Rotary games, luckily. I just can't seem to get good response elsewhere.  And forget 4 way games - I try to walk to the right and jump in Shinobi and suddenly I'm on the upper level....

That review is quite accurate.  All the components in the Happ Rotary are identical to the super.

Consider the Happ 360 rotary if you're having problems with the directional controls.

It's been behaving a LITTLE better since then...I used the rotary 8 way to beat double dragon (which then crashed and quit mame when the last of the bad guys exited the doors)....

But there is still some sensitivity. Maybe I just need to get used to the joysticks.  I haven't really used joysticks in the arcade since they were leaf.

But there IS one thing...there is bounce, if I pull the joystick down, then let it spring back to center, it'll overshoot and hit the up direction on me...which has gotten in the way with normal gameplay a few times...unintentional bounce.  It feels to me like the throw is too short on the stick...

that Double Dragon crash is due to the overclock.  <-- you overclocked MAME so that DD wouldn't be so SLOW rite?

I love playing DD without any slowdown but unfortunately it makes the game crash at the end.

The supers I have suffer from a little bounce as well.  The P360s are really worth it since they feel good regardless of which game I'm playing.  <-- you should check starburst to see if they still have old/overstocked P360 Wicos.  I got mine for like 20$cdn each.

Druin,

Don't supers have little metal actuator arms on the switches?  On my super clone sticks from x-arcade, I had to futz with the little metal arms to get it sensitive enough for me on diagonals.  *shrug* just a thought if you felt like going to town with some needle nose pliers...

I have found that all Happ Sticks are way too diagonal happy. They all seem to have larger diagonal areas than primary areas. I try to avoid using them altogether.

I dont sense any difference in diagonal response between my J-STick from Ultimarc and the Happs Supers I have in there now....of course I didn't route, so the sticks are on the stubby side, which is just how I like them (its the way I hold them).

Does the happs 360 require an external power source to run it?  Thats the one without switches I believe, right? Or is that the happs 48-way......can they be used interchangably?

Well, I was wondering how does the Happs Rotary have the same functionality in say StreetFighter or MK as the 8 way does?

If I had a choice and wanted to be able to play both the Streetfighter style games and Contra style, should I go with the Happs Rotary for both or dedicate joys for each?
