Can anyone identify these pedals?
« on: March 26, 2008, 11:38:25 am »
I recently won arcade pedals off ebay.  I wouldn't care about what they were from except that one of the pots has 4 wires coming off it and I am trying to figure out how to hook them up.

Thanks.

Not sure what they're from, but here's a pretty good site abbout how pots work and how they are typically hooked up:

http://sound.westhost.com/pots.htm

You might want to get a basic multimeter too in order to determine which terminals are which.

Hope this helps,

Thanks.

I understand basically how they work - i was just a bit concerned when I saw that one has 4 wires, instead of three.  That was a first for me.

4 wires? That's a new one on me. 3 is normal. Can you give another (clear) shot of the pot in question?

Looks like a Happ Controls "Dual Pedal Assembly".

Looks like a Happ Controls "Dual Pedal Assembly".

It looks similar but it is certainly not quite the same:

I have a set of Happ ones and the return to normal spring mechanism is different, as is the toothed cam and the position of the pots. FWIW the ones I have had normal 3 pin pots.

Hmm, 4 pin hints to me optical (limited spinner, like atari's steering wheel for road blasters).  Just guessing, though.  Could be a few switches + ground, or even two POTs.  A pic of the POT/sensor would help, but until then, what are the the colors of the wires?

I'm going to take better photos once I get home.  Thanks for the info so far, though.

Those are Betson pedals..... I recognise them because they're almost identical to the ones fitted on "Fast & Furious"  watch the bearings... they're nylon and have a habit of wearing out quite quickly.

No idea about this 4 wire thing though..... Unles one of those wires is just an earth grounding wire for the pedal mechanism.

Most bottles and jars contain at least twenty-five percent recycled Pacman.
And research indicates that Space Invaders are strongly attracted to people who have recently eaten meat pies.

Here is a better photo.  It looks like it is a ground (an additional one?) like someone suggested.

It was me.... and yes, that's what it is.... It's not an additional one though.  This is an electrical earth connection. It should be connected to the earth that comes in from your mains power lead. It's not a low voltage ground (return) connection like the one that completes the circuit to your buttons.

This one is designed to conduct dangerous mains voltages away to earth in the event of a mains electrical fault. Rather than those voltages traveling through the pedals and you, in their attempt to get to earth.

However.... as you probably don't have anything that could cause the pedals to go live in the event of a mains fault, and they are probably only connected to the computer via the pots, (which is an LV low voltage conection) you actually should leave that wire unconnected! In the actual event that there is a fault somewhere else in the cabinet, and mains voltage suddenly gets sent to earth via the mains earth tag... if that wire is connected your pedals would go mains live at the same time.
