Start a game competition thread/forum?
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:40:42 pm »
Did a brief search and came up with nothing of note, though I would guess this has been asked before? What about having a weekly or monthly game competition at BYOAC?

That sounds fun, but everybody does not have the same game(s) so you would probably have to pick a browser based or small freeware game.  In that case, Monthly or quarterly seems a bit better than weekly.  Worldwide All time high scores lists, the likes of which you can find at Twin Galaxies, may be the best for arcade style gaming, though.

There is also MARP:

They have contests and 'bounties' from time to time.

I agree a friendly BYOAC competition would be cool though.

I'd be down.  Getting smashed by someone else at Donkey Kong gives me something to work towards, hahaha....(current personal best:  91,300)

Heh. I've been feeling pretty cocky as of late; playing Zoo Keeper and thought I had gotten pretty good .. until I checked out the Twin Galaxies site .. 239,000 points puts me at 21 on the list  :laugh2:
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Its a cool idea. Twin Galaxies does a for-fun version with their MAME Decathlon. I would prefer a single game for a week or two over their 10 game format because there always winds up being a game or two in their selections that I couldn't bring myself to play over and over to get competitive.

Oh. My top is 399,*** - but average maybe 150k. I know about TG and MARP. Too serious. And I'm not that great a player.

I'm first trying to see if Saint would support it, then how much interest there is here. I have some basic ideas on set-up:

- three levels of experience (you choose which one you think you're in - but maybe some score guidelines if needed).

- game selection: a) the winners of the previous round decide on the next game; b) the first twenty posters are tallied; c) something else?

- game type: I would suggest MAME, Daphne, and VP. If popular enough, consoles could maybe get their own.

I think simple might be better - no prizes or yearly tallies - but it would depend on the public.

I had this link lingering around unnoticed. Neat way to do VP. Maybe this could be linked here, and then we could cocentrate on Mame and Daphne.
