ROM vs Upright
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:10:42 pm »
I found the ROM for my dedicated upright, Rough Ranger, so I decided to download it and give it a try.  I plan to keep the game as a dedicated upright till I finish the cabinet I am working on and convert the other cabinet that I have to MAME.  It will be in my guess 8 to 12 months before they are done. Then I am not sure what I will do with it.

Have any of you found major differences between the ROM and a dedicated unit?

Well imagine my surprise when the color scheme was very different.  At first I thought this was a ROM issue.  Well after about 2 seconds I smartened up I thought this is more likely an issue with the upright.  I know the upright has issues with sound, very very low buzz and once in a while I hear a sound very faint, and the Marquee light, makes a horrible buss when lit.  I leave the Marquee light unplugged and the speakers do not bother me as I am not a sound person.  Also it does not save high scores.  I have looked but there is no place for a battery on or near the motherboard, I turn it off when I do not play it.

I had no idea there was such a huge color issues with the monitor.  I thought the screen was close to what it should be.  I kind of like the darker tone it give the game an ominous feel but I would prefer to get the colors close to what they should be.  The screen is good with no burn in so I can not tell what it was before it was converted to Rough Ranger.  There are some scuffs and scratches where I can see red underneath the black.  Could the monitor be adjusted?  Should I replace the capacitors? Or should I just leave it?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Below is some screen pictures to compare.

There is a fault with the blue drive on that monitor..... You have no blue at all.

Several possible locations for this fault.

1) The game board is not outputting a signal on the blue signal line.
2) poor connections in the plugs and sockets at the game board end.
3) poor connections in the plugs and sockets at the monitor end.
4) The wiring in the blue signal line between the game board and the monitor is faulty.
5) The monitor has a fault on the blue gun drive.

All of these need to be checked.... You should be able to buzz through the wiring with a multimeter.

If you don't know what you are doing then find a monitor technician or TV repair technician, close to where you live and get them to take a look at it. Monitors are dangerous if you don't understand them. They carry 25000 Volts on the tube, and can store that sort of charge even when they are turned off!!

Thanks Fozzy.  I will see if I can find what is wrong with it.

Having no blue make it look like you operating at night and like I said before it gives it an ominous look.

Another interesting difference is the guy standing on the table in the 2nd picture.  He is completely missing in MAME.  Maybe you are using a slightly different rom revision as what's in MAME?

LOL your right, it almost looks like he shouldnt be there either, how weird. Acually having another look you can see the text isnt fully spoken on the first picture from the second, maybe the guy runs in during the sentence and jumps on the table?
