i got a free ikari game
« on: March 20, 2008, 02:10:41 pm »
Well im new to the forums, hope to meet alot of cool friendly game lovin people here. So the story about this arcade game is that after my stepfather had moved his company to a bigger  warehouse we had found an old ikari warriors game that works perfectly fine, we also found super mario bros which worked fine aswell. i took the ikari one home already  ;D and am already thinking about when im goin back for the marios one. heres some pics of ikari warriors, i also have a few questions.

one of these revolving joysticks is working perfectly fine and the other one wont go towards the northwest direction. is it possible to switch player 1 joystick with players 2? for now until i can find another joystick.

haha i defenitley would be on my way to go pick it up now if i had my car. as for switching joysticks im no expert at this stuff and am completely clueless as what to do, i stuck my head in there and saw plenty of wires that need to be disconnected and reattached but im not sure which wires are for what part.

Im not familiar with the wiring for a rotary joy (Im a noob too) but you should take a few photos with your dig camera so at least you have something to go back to if you get confused.

Great score btw. Get that mario bros. ASAP before someone else decides to take it!!

Little more complicated stick than usual.
Just grab a notepad and write down what connected where, and put some white labels on the wires with something written to indicate where they came from.

I'm sure there's gotta be an online source of info about them, I just don't know where...

Yeah, I wish there was a place where people gathered to talk about arcade controls.  Then you could search and find your answer.

Sorry, my comment was dripping with enough sarcasm that I didn't feel the need to put a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" in there.

Not to criticize but those are some blurry pictures... ;)

It looks like you'd be able to swap the connector for each joystick and then swap the "NO"(normally open) wire for the buttons.  This would swap the player 1 and player two controls.

BUT FIRST!

You gotta open the CP.  Look/feel for two or three spring clips that hold it down. Un do those and you can flip the Control panel for easy access to do this easy swap.

You could also clean the two joysticks, and see if the nonworking one becomes "working" again.  It just might need a switch.

Read everything you can on this forum about what people did to their games.

thanks for the replies, i have already opened the CP and looked inside and was scared to death lol but no worries i think if i can just write everything down and just do the "same wire same place" thing and see what happens. i had searched for manuals and such but i got nothing about replacing joysticks with any diagrams or clear instructions on how to.

why not just play on the player 2 side? too easy?

Ikari is great but having that and mario would be even better.

Swapping the joysticks is easy. I did it on my Guerrilla War machine. Just disconnect any wire harnesses from the joystick assembly and I think there are 4 screws that hold it in place. It wasn't too hard to remember how to reconnect the wires to the joystick assembly after swapping them. I didn't have to write anything down, and it was my first time doing it too. So that should be an easy fix for you.  8)

one of these revolving joysticks is working perfectly fine and the other one wont go towards the northwest direction. is it possible to switch player 1 joystick with players 2? for now until i can find another joystick.

That's a common problem with those joysticks (one or more diagonals not working). I'm not sure what causes it but something must wear on them to the point that it can't trip two microswitches at once in the corners (I don't see how the microswitches themselves can be the problem if the north, south, east, and west all work).

Anyway, to swap them, just unplug everything (2 wires for each microswitch [8 total for each joystick] plus the rotary switch harness); unbolt them, and then the tricky part...

You need a special tool (either the official tool or a homemade one from e.g. a section of coat hanger wire) to remove the caps on the tops of the yellow plastic handles. Once you remove the caps, there is a nut down in there that needs to be removed, and then the handles will come off. That allows you to remove the joystick from the control panel.

The Oscar Controls guy made a good thread detailing how to do this with a homemade tool (made from a coat hanger); and that's how I do it as well. Maybe you can find that thread.

I didn't have to remove the caps off the joysticks to remove them from the control panel. Are you sure that's necessary?

If the holes in the CP aren't big enough, you'll need to do as he said.  Sounds like your CP has big enough holes not to.

You'd have to have a pretty big joystick hole in the control panel to fit those octagonal handles through. The hole in a dedicated Ikari Warriors CP for example, is not large enough to do that. It sounds like someone may have made the hole extra large in your CP because they didn't know how to get the handles off, or didn't want to be bothered.
