Where can I get this, or similar?
« on: March 20, 2008, 01:35:54 pm »
Hey guys,

I am looking to get a removable steering wheel for my cab. I like the one shown in the video linked below. I would like one that works easily with mame (install) and possibly has gas/break pedals as well, but that isn't a must.

I have a slikstik quad control panel like the one in the video (yes i know, i should have picked up the 2-player one).

I look on ebay and they say they are for ps2-3 or xbox(360) etc. Will these work on mame without a lot of hacking?

Also, what is the type of mountng called that mounts on this way? I don't want to put screws into my control panel or anything...

You can get pretty much any USB steering wheel and it will work with MAME. Windows (and hence MAME) sees it as an analog input device with buttons. You can then pretty much use it as is. The steering wheel will be seen in MAME as Analog X-Axis, and the gas pedal will be seen as Analog Y-Axis. Sometimes the gas and brake pedals are Y-Up and Y-Down. It will probably take some tweaking in the MAME input settings to get the feel right for your preference, but once they are set you will be fine. Force feedback won't work in MAME, so it doesn't need to be something you look for.

thank you. that was really helpful. I just need one that will desktop-style mount. I don't want one of the suction cup mounted ones.

edit: the exact model shown in the video is here: http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/logitech_gt_force_fx_steering_wheel_for_ps3.php

The FX is nice, and relatively cheap.
The force feedback on it isn't as good as the higher end Logitech ones though.

The Driving Force Pro is the next step up, and well worth the money, if you can swing it.
It has 900 degree steering, which allows you to set the amount of steering you want in Windows.
I keep mine set to 360.
That gives you 180 degrees in each direction, which keeps you from hitting the artificial end of travel.
The force feedback on the Driving Force Pro is alot stronger, and feels more real than the FX.

The next step up is the G25.
This one is absolutely awesome, compared to the other two, and again is well worth the money, if you've got it.
The feedback is even better then the DFP.
The wheel is metal, with leather wrapping, and is an inch larger than the DFP.
It has a 6-speed shifter that is separate from the wheel, and has a clutch pedal that the other wheels don't.

With the exception of some of the ultra-high end racing simulators, the G25 is the top of the line.
There are pedal kits out there that use load sensors, to gauge how hard you are pressing the pedal, rather than how far you are pressing it.
Those provide a much more real feel, but are running hundreds for just the pedals.
