current and old midway logo... which fonts were used?
« on: March 19, 2008, 04:48:40 pm »
hello,
does anybody know what font was used for the midway logo?
i need a decent vector version of i but can't seem to find one.

the downloads on localarcade are not perfect to say the least so i thought i'd give it a try myself.

i've tried helvetica black italic for the current logo... pretty close but i'm not sure.

the old logo might be some altered helvetica but also not sure.

thanks.

Could you post a pic of the exact Midway logo you're speaking of?
Then we can review the pic and see the font matching. Cheers.

What's wrong with the logo I did on the sideart or the one Zorg did on the marquee? Or with the one on the logos sheet from spies.com? The midway logo Zorg did (as a seperate thing) doesn't look to nice from the thumbnail, but there must be a ton of MIDWAY logo's on localarcade.

This is just an opinion, but did you try Arial (Bold) (Italic)?

BTW WhatTheFont says it looks like "John Sans Cond Heavy SC Bold Italic" or Proxima Nova SCond-Black It. Some letters work best with small caps.

Well I was thinking about any of the MIDWAY logo's that are on localarcade. They all look the same. I also checked the logo on the Midway website to see if they have a new logo. Not sure if the new logo is really much different though. Maybe it's a bit less bold.

thanks guys, sorry for the late reply...
i needed it cause i would like a generic bally midway marquee in the future...

i'm almost sure now (for the current midway logo) they've used helvetica black italic, skewed it some more and altered the 'a' and 'y'... so that's what i did... it's pretty precise...
the bally logo i got from logotypes.ru...

only thing... in 1981 the midway logo looked different but i like the current one better.
i have a .ai file of it, willing to share but where do i put it?

to further illustrate the idea...

Just ZIP the file and then attach the file to you post by licking the "additional options" at the bottom of the message reply.

Put it on localarcade. That's where people look if they are looking for arcade artwork.

What was so wrong with the stuff on localarcade?

there were several problems with the logos i found at localarcade.com

the top one is the old midway localarcade logo but when i compared it to other old logos i found online... they didn't match... the way it is skewed and spaced is different so i decided not to use that one, plus i like the current logo way better.

the red one is my version of the current midway logo which was traced from a bitmap that resembles the logo on the midway side.

the third logo is the localarcade version of the current midway logo but if you look at the white space in between the ''a'' and the ''w'' compared to my version you'll see what i mean.

i guess the ''d'' i took from one of the midway logos on localarcade speaks for itself...

the bally logo... i assume it was taken from logotypes.ru (i also got it from there) they usually have pretty tight stuff.

Alright that does look bad yes.

The logo I did on the Galaga sideart did not have the sides of the W and A line up. It looked the similar to Zorgs MIDWAY logo (although there was less white space between the individual characters). So that's what you meant with old logo. The new logo (and thus your version) does look more clean.

yes...
if you only use it as a signature (small) it's no big deal, but since i would like to use it for my future marquee i thought it should be as close as possible.

Would it help you if I scanned my original MIDWAY coin door plate at like 600 dpi for you to trace? It has that slanted logo like you're showing. It's on my Pac-man machine, so it's their logo from 1981.

i will use the current version for my marquee but i'm willing to look into the old one if you have a decent scan...
thanks.
