mala and arcade ambience
« on: March 19, 2008, 10:05:22 am »
I decided to install a second sound card so that I can play arcade ambience mp3's on separate speakers outside of my cab. So in other words, I want normal stuff to go to the cab's speakers (animated snaps and gameplay sound) but arcade ambience to go to separate speakers.

From what I can tell, there is no way in mala to play the mp3's on a non-default sound card, is there? I can tell WMP to target a particular sound card so I figure I may need to go that direction (or some other media player that supports it), but I'm not seeing an option in mala to launch it on startup. I have mala set as my shell, so the explorer startup folder isn't really an option. Is there a way to launch a background app when mala is the shell?

I have not found a good solution for this yet.  I am hunting for a similiar solution myself.  I have two sets of speakers.  Both have their own controls.  I have two soundcards installed in my PC.  I am looking for a solution that will allow all Mala emulation (games, video snaps, ambience, and sound effects) to be directed to one audio output while my touchscreen jukebox be directed to another set of speakers, (second audio card).  The only program that I can see that might work is listed in the above link.  I would love for an easier way to make this work.  Not sure if it is possible without switching Windows default audio settings.  I will keep my eye on this post.  Thanks, Shane

I don't get why you don't just let everything but your jukebox be handled by the default sound card, and set the jukebox to use a non-default sound card.

My problem isn't with getting all the different audio sources playing on the right speakers; my problem is simply with launching the media player on startup since explorer isn't my windows shell (mala is).

If you have Mala set as your shell, you can use a program like XYNT Service or RunAsSvc to run applications at services. Check out the Misc Tools section under Utilities in the Wiki.

Ah. I think what you mean is mala has a built in jukebox? I'm not at home so I'm not sure on that, but that would certainly make his issue understandable. And it probably explains why I didn't use it for my solution! ;)

Good idea! I've used a program like that in the past, but it didn't yet occur to me to use it for this. Not quite ideal (would be better to have a UI from within mala, of course), but certainly better than nothing!
