Looks like it will be a cool project, I've always loved that game. I don't recall anyone here doing one before. Will it be a dedicated Karate Champ or will you mame it and add other fighters as well?

As for cab dimensions, have you checked out Jakeobuds site? He has lots of plans tho I don't know if he has this one or not.

What are you going to do for artwork?

its actually jakobud found here:
http://www.jakobud.com/cabinetPlans.php
and I didn't see a Karate Champ :(

well... after emailing everyone on the internet that has a cabinet on there site/on ebay...  :banghead:

I finally got in contact with NoiseLandArcade which had a final fight cabinet which was in an old Kung Fu Master cabinet... he kindly spared some time and measured the cabinet up and sent the plans over

so we are going to make a cardboard cutout later this week, before we start cutting wood  :tool:

Great! Persistence pays off! Make sure you get them plans archived so someone won't have to go thru what you did in the future. Good Job

I am pretty familiar with the KC cabinet (I assume from the pics on your site that you want the two player cab).  Mine is deep in storage, otherwise I would've measured it for you, but if you need to know some detail I'll try to help.  I'll be following the thread.

Of the joysticks offered around here, Randy(GGG)'s Omnistick basic looks the closest to the stock KC sticks, but I haven't played them so I don't know if they have the short/stiff throw necessary (I also don't know if Randy still stocks them as they are out right now).  I've played a KC with old Wico leaf sticks and the long sloppy throw of the sticks really changed the character of the game for me.  I have an old Ultimarc T-stick plus on my emu cab that has a very similar stiff/short throw to the KC originals, but looks all wrong.

I'm pretty sure you'll want 4-ways and not 8-ways.

Let me know if I can help with anything that doesn't involve unpiling the house worth of stuff in front of it right now.

ok took longer than I hoped to do... but I've made pt1. of the initial template... PAPER

for the plans I draw to scale paper/cardboard/wood... so here's a outline of the cabinet (70% original size).
also attached is the manual scale... think the sizing looks right!

also: thanks to mrclean we have some good scans of the karate champ marquee, sideart and CPO... the CPO is almost 100% vectored and the others are being done...

I was looking at the side art on your blog...

The side art on my cab does not have the blue rectangular background.  The circular logo on the top and rounded corners at the bottom are the edges of the side art.  Everything outside those curves should be black or not there at all.

So will the cabinet be 70% scale?  Will your CP be cramped by being about 17" wide?

Looks like you're well on your way!  The art looks great!  What will you print it on?

I am trying to somewhat restore my KC cabinet. At best, without spending a year to do it, it will end up being an 8 1/2 to 9 out of 10. The top corner on one side was broken off, I cut out a piece of partical board, and glued it in place, it looks better but not 100% perfect. I am repainting the sides and having a lot of fun with that! Getting the rust off the joystick shafts..mine has the Wico leaf sticks. I already put in a brand new vision pro monitor. I had to take it out of the horizontal casing and put it in the vertical casing that was in the machine. That took about 2 hours but got it to work.

Keep up posted on your project!
