xbox modchip & mame question
« on: May 22, 2003, 02:21:52 pm »
Saw this mentioned in another topic, I've tried doing some research to figure out exactly what this is all about and I'm still pretty much clueless. I've read all about how the modchips allow you to bypass the BIOS and all that, my simple question is, how do you play MAME on Xbox, and is there an adapter for xbox controls to play in my mame cabinet? How does this work? Is anyone using an xbox with a modchip as the brains in their mame cab?

http://www.xbox-scene.com/

and more specifically

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=7409d952030feee470bf291e278ccdda&act=SF&f=17

Maybe you already know this, but you need to A) install the modchip and B) install a replacement "dashboard" like Evolution-X, basically a new interface which allows you to access homebrew apps like MameX - I beleive most people FTP these to the XBOX hard drive and play from there.

Since actually doing this stuff is highly illegal you'll find that gathering some of the specific info you need...and especially gathering the software can be a somewhat cryptic  and frustrating process. Don't expect to find any direct links to software downloads. Get familiar with IRC. And remember that while you probably don't stand any risk from doing this, a guy just got prison time for selling modchips.  :o Granted, he was also running a WAREZ site... but the feds busted him for receiving chips with intent to sell them from what I understand so for some people the stakes are higher than for what you're interested in. Just keep that in mind and be patient as you learn.

add to this:

Why would you want to run MAME on your x-box in the first place...if you're reading this board, you've probably already got a PC..which can....ulp...run Mame.

Unless you're just looking to tinker...

Because you can.  ::)

I guess it would be to base your cabinet on xbox so you could play both. ;D But you're right - it's pretty much a tinkering thing. :P
