Template for the "Build Your Own Arcade" Control Panel???
« on: March 01, 2008, 10:35:22 pm »
Does anyone know where I can find a template (with measurements) of the "Build Your Own Arcade" control panel?  I'm building my first so I just want to stick with something tried and tested.

The only thing is the book (and the cd for that matter) doesn't seem to have the measurements of the controls on top of the panel.  It does have the size of the actually panel but nothing relating where the controls are within that space, with precise measurements that is.  Like, how far away is the left joystick from the edge?  What is the distance between the buttons and the joysticks?  Etc.

Can anyone help me out??

The reason there are no measurements is because it's a matter of personal taste and preference as to what controls you are going to have and where they are going to go.

Just take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the dimensions of the control panel, then print out some templates for a trackball, joysticks and some buttons and start playing arts and crafts with them until you get a layout that suits what you want.

Some people want a 4 player cp while some only want a 2 player. It's all up to what you want.

I understand it's all up to personal taste but there must be a standard for certain things.  There are books upon books for ergonomics for standard everything devices (photocopier button layouts, etc).

I think the key one I'm looking for is how high and far away should the joysticks be away from the buttons?

Thanks fixedpigs.  Any idea what language that page is?  i want to run it through a translator to see what types of comments they are giving.

EDIT:  nm.  it's polish.

I asked about button layout a while back, and it was helpful to me. I ended up going with a variant of Kajoq's 2nd layout. I just had 6 buttons, and the spacing between joystick and buttons was different. But this was very helpful to me in laying out the buttons.
