Donkey Kong PCB type.
« on: February 25, 2008, 08:11:54 pm »
According to KLOV, Donkey Kong was manufactured in four different PCB types/models.  Does anyone know where I would find the model of my PCB, if looking at it?  I'm trying to figure out which one it is!

There were really only 2 types of board sets, 4-board and 2-board.

1. TRS-01 and TRS-02 - (Radarscope) 4-board sets were the initial Donkey Kong boards.  Radarscope sold very poorly, so they converted these machines at the factory to Donkey Kong.

2. TKG2-03 - They removed the extra circuitry from the TRS (Radarscope) boards creating the TKG-2 board set.

3. TKG3-04 thru -06 - Next they revised the board to the TKG-3 board set.  I believe these were made to eliminate the need to jump capacitor's ac cross certain chips.  The individual board in this set have several revisions each.

4. TKG4 -  Finally, the combined the sound and CPU board into one, and the CLK and Video PCBS into one creating the 2-board TKG-4 board set (There are at least 4 revisions of the TKG4 set that I've seen, TKG4-11, TKG4-12, TKG4-13, TKG4-14).

Best,

There's also several ROM revisions, although I don't know if that's board specific or not. Some early DK's had a feature where you could sit at the top of the ladder and the barrels wouldn't come down on you. Seems like I remember "back in the day", that these were usually the red cabinets. I do remember playing a few machines with this bug/feature. There's also at least 2 Japanese versions (with the board pattern like Crazy Kong). One has the "How High Can You Try?" like Crazy Kong and also the jump cheat on the barrel level that Crazy Kong has. At least this version shows up in MAME (it's called Japan set 3, bad dump?)
