Pushbuttons - What's Everyone Preferences...?
« on: February 23, 2008, 03:04:58 pm »
Personally, I'm looking for something like Galaga, that nice 'pop' to a button that reminds me of the good ol' days.  Do you guys prefer one company over another?

For instance, is there a difference between Ultimarc's and Happ's buttons?  Ultimarc has only one option (which is helpful for me!), which I'm assuming is the arcade standard, but Happ has the two versions.  Of these two, which one is the most "old school"?  (As you know) they have the regular "Pushbutton"...

http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/5891xxl.htm

...and then the "Ultimate Pushbutton"...

http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/539200xx.htm

Sorry for such a noob question, I greatly appreciate everyone's help though.

I go to www.groovygamegear.com for all of my stuff.  Randy T, the owner, frequents these boards often and he is a great help.

They sell the typical concave buttons that you see on the front page in their logo.  Beware, there are convex buttons out there as well, but he only sells the concave ones, which is what most people use.

Sanwa!!

Japanese parts are awesome.  Most of the people here stick to HAPP, but Sanwa buttons feel so much nicer and more precise.

If you are going to go HAPP, Their convex buttons are generally considered a higher quality button, especially in the Fighter community.  The Concave are going to be what you're more used to seeing though.

Groovy game gear has buttons that can change colors, which is fun, because only the buttons you use for that game light up, and they can be in the color of the original button.

Interesting that nobody clued into the "something like Galaga" and pointed him towards leaf switch buttons ...  :dizzy:

RoninEditor -- these are the real old school if that is what you are indeed looking for. They are my preferred solution and are available from a number of sources.

Thanks for all of these leads guys, MUUUUUUCH appreciated.  I'm so vague on the terminology and all of that, if I could have seen the Happ buttons up close I could have instantly be like, "That one!"  But now I know!!

Has anyone had issues hooking up the leaf switch ones to the Ipac?  I'm definitely now leaning to the standard Happ ones but the leaf suggestion kinda perked my ears up, especially with the Galaga comparison, haha.

Leaf switches are dummy proof. There are only two leads.

I'm looking into leaf switches - mainly because if the performance (or lack of click) issues.

Leafs all the way.  IMO the only way to play the old games (including Galaga).       :)

Do you still have those leaf-switch brackets for micro-switch pushbuttons?

I saw the review in RetroBlast.

hmm.. those I might actually like!  I cant stand leaf buttons for newer games because the throw is so long and.. sloppy.   but the combination of short button throw and leaf switch would probably be quite nice!
