Pretty neat little guide there. I'll print it out and leave it next to the multi-cade.

I've got a Donkey Kong book too, but it's called "Playing Donkey Kong to Win"...the one you have is much more informative. If I'd seen that one, I think I would have been alot more successful at the 3rd elevator level. Mine doesn't give you any tricks to get past the springs.

I've always used a SLIGHT variation of their "rivet" method.  I tried theirs and it seems to work as well...but I seem to get an extra couple hundred bonus points with their method.   I like.

I stumbled upon this thread actually indirectly via google! I had this book as a kid and tonight I felt like trying to track it down online. Thanks a lot for posting this. I pretty much remember all the tips (after all, DK is my favorite game), but it brings back great memories!

Nice, thanks.  Interesting that the book (from 1982) refers to Mario.  When was Jumpman changed to Mario?

Donkey Kong Junior was out in 1982, was he Mario in there?  Looks like it - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/Dkj_arcade.jpg

Also from wikipedia, which I found interesting:
Quote
Upon becoming the developer of a retooled Radar Scope, Miyamoto developed the game Donkey Kong, which tells a story of a carpenter whose girlfriend is kidnapped by a gorilla. The result was an early Mario, with a tubular nose, red pair of dungarees, blue shirt, and red cap. The design was strongly affected by the technical limitations of the hardware, which permitted only 16x16 pixels for the main character. The moustache was easier to represent than a mouth, and formed the image of a large nose. The multicolored clothes provided contrast with the black background, and the overalls served as a distinction between the body and the arms, so that one recognized their movement. Because of the cap, it was not necessary to represent the movement of Mario's hair if he jumped.[7]

The character, named "Jumpman" by Miyamoto, was renamed by Minoru Arakawa due to his physical similarity to Nintendo of America's landlord, Mario Segale. Along with the name change came an occupational change, as a colleague suggested that Mario looked more like a plumber than a carpenter. The color combination of the shirt and dungarees was modified in later games from a blue shirt and red dungarees to a brown shirt and red dungarees, and finally to Mario's 'standard' appearance, a red shirt and blue dungarees. Despite more efficient video game hardware and the improved possibilities of realistic graphics, Mario has kept his iconic appearance as it remains even today.

After his appearance in Donkey Kong Junior, Mario appeared again in 1983 in Mario Bros., Mario's first appearance as the titular hero. In this game, which was originally called Pipe Jump, Mario and his brother Luigi must exterminate Shellcreepers (the origin of Koopa Troopas) and other pests that entered from the underground pipes by jumping up against the platform where the creature was.

204,000 is my highest.

I was just ON it that game.  Got lucky on the pie factory stages as well.  Got chased all over the place and still made it.

I died 2 times stupidly so I know I can do better.

Sounds like the cheat.dat mixed with the save state TOK mentioned would be a good mix for conquering the harder stages.

I've done the mame cheat for infinite lives and it's good practice, but when you start out you have to go through all of the easy levels, not soo bad of a deal either I guess. :)

Oh, and by doing the cheat I was able to get good enough that when I turned the cheat off I could finally make it past the 3rd & 4th elevator stages playing a "factory setting" game. Starting with 3 lives etc...

I also used the hints in the book posted above and Steve Wiebe's tricks from the DVD K.O.K, which were very helpful.

Still works for me.  You have to look very closely at the stupid cat pictures and only select the 4 letters/numbers with the cat that has the exact same shape.

Maybe someone can upload the file to scribd.com? That way you can read it online.
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to read it and see how my game improves.

Coincidentally I just found my old copy of "How to Beat the Video Games" that I'm pretty sure I got from a book club in elementary school. In it's 112 pages it covers Pac-Man, Battlezone, Tempest, Defender, Berzerk, Centipede,  Qix, Gorf, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Scramble, Star Castle, Galaxian, Galaga, Mousetrap, Make Trax, Eliminator, Donkey Kong, Stargate, and Omega Race.

I was pretty stoked to find it but hadn't even thought of scanning it. Maybe I'll find time at work tomorrow night to start scanning it in. If I can run it through the document feeder I'll post the whole book in a new thread tomorrow night.
Brevity is not my strong suit.
