Mala LedWiz plugin and trackball
« on: February 22, 2008, 02:29:37 pm »
I just installed the GGG Electric ICE trackball kit and subsequently set up the Mala LedWiz plugin for P1_TRACKBALL (on ports 29, 30 and 31).  I was hoping that the trackball would light up when games that use the trackball were selected while scrolling through the game list in Mala.  All of the buttons light up correctly, but nothing seems to light up the trackball.  I have the latest controls.ini and I see trackball entries (albeit for P1_TRACKBALL_Y,  P1_TRACKBALL_X_EXT, P1_TRACKBALL_X, and P1_TRACKBALL_Y_EXT).  The trackball lights up correctly in the configurator (with the light panel on fly checkbox checked).  Is there something I'm missing?

What plugin are you using for Mala I believe there are 2 or 3 LED-WiZ plugins.
My suggestion is that if one doesn't work try another. If you are using LED-Blinky I would try The LED-Blinky thread here in the software section. Arzoo has really helped me with my LED-Blinky issues and is a really cool guy.

Hi,

I just tried the Led-Wiz Plug-in I was invloved with V2.0
http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/plugins.html#LEDWiz

It works fine

The Leds I just allocated to a trackball worked fine with Centipede.

Did you refresh your gamelist?

Did you specify the path of this file in MaLa?

This is the controls ini data I have.

Code: [Select]
[centiped]
gamename=Centipede (revision 3)
numPlayers=2
alternating=1
mirrored=1
tilt=1
cocktail=1
usesService=0
miscDetails=
P1NumButtons=1
P1Controls=Trackball+trackball
P1_BUTTON1=Fire
P1_TRACKBALL_X=Left
P1_TRACKBALL_X_EXT=Right
P1_TRACKBALL_Y=Up
P1_TRACKBALL_Y_EXT=Down

I use LEDBlinky and it works great! It must be something configured incorrectly if you are using one of these two.

Loadman - thanks for jumping in.  I am useing the the ledwiz plugin v2.0.  My controls.ini has exactly what you posted and I'm pointing at it from Mala.  I tried refreshing the game list to no avail.  Is there any debug logging flags I can turn on to get more information?  The trackball light up for the Mala start and game start effects, so I know it's hooked up.  I also tried specifying "always on" and it still does not light up.  Thoughts?

Yeah,

From what you say the Lidwiz is woired up OK and the Led-Wiz Config looks OK.

I don't think any logs will reveal anything

I think the question is if MaLa is passing the controls.ini data to the plug-in.?

Anyway,

Have you tried chnaging what LEDS are allocated to Trackball (just temp) to see if that works?

can you post your mala.ini file please

I will try setting a different LED for P1_TRACKBALL and let you know how that goes.  In the meantime, here's my mala.ini.  I'm software developer by trade and can usually debug problems, but this one is giving me trouble....

I switched P1_TRACKBALL to use the LED in P1_BUTTON7 (a single LED) and P1 button 7 does not light up in Mala when centipede is selected.  Does this point in the direction of what Mala is sending to the plugin?

I would think so.  I will test your mala.ini when I get home

OK

So that looks fine.

If you change other data (like number of buttons) in your controls.ini and then refresh your game list does that effect your led display?

Well, I modified controls.ini which is in my c:\mame subdir and it made no difference.  I changed Burger Time [btime] to "P1NumButtons=3" and added "P1_BUTTON2=Pepper1" and "P1_BUTTON3=Pepper2" refreshed the game list and only the P1B1 lit up in Mala.  So it appears that it is not using controls.ini (correct?).    I've configured controls.ini to c:\mame\controls.ini.

So is it pulling the info from mame.xml?

I think. From Memory  :-\

That MaLa uses the xml file but info from Controls .ini over-rides it.

Maybe there is something wrong with your controls .ini file?

Does the mala.exe.log tell you anything when you enable logging (in the credits section)?

It's gotta be something simple.

Do you want me to send you my working controls.ini file?

I'll try turning on the logging and see what happens.  I downloaded controls.ini from http://fe.donkeyfly.com/controls/controls.php, but it couldn't hurt to diff it with your working copy.

Also for your fault finding.

You may find the attached plug-in useful.

It is the demo plug-in from the MaLa SDK.

What it does is simply log all info sent from MaLa to the MaLa plug-ins.

So it shows the data from controls.ini.

Data is saved in a text file called events.log.

This may save you some time working out the fault.

This logging is not be confused with a MaLa.exe.log which is an optional global log for mala. This is creted if the checkbox is checked in the credits section of mala config.

That demo plug-in should be very useful.  Even if it is pulling it from mame.xml, there is trackball specified in there.  Thanks for taking all of the time to help me with this.

All right, I'm an idiot.  My ledwiz_configurator.exe (and ocx_installer et al) are in a LedWiz subdir under plugins.  The ledwiz.cfg  was being update in this subdir.  I needed to copy it to the parent plugins subdir and everything worked great.  Thanks for all of the help and sorry for spinning yor wheels.
