4 controls on an iPac 2
« on: February 20, 2008, 08:59:31 am »
Question:  My cabinet only has 2 sets of co-op controls (technically not a question).

This can be SOMEWHAT problematic when playing games where your character selection is determined by what "slot" you put your coin in (i.e. in the Simpsons arcade game, P1 defaults to marge).

Is there any way around this?  Could you perhaps re program the controls for one game to work for either the P1 or P3 slot?

For example.  Let's say someone wants to be, I dunno, Bart instead of Marge.  Perhaps I could set up a shift function for the "P1 coin button" to also act as P3's coin button, and then program the P3 controls to use the same buttons as the P1 controls...

It sounds plausible in my head.

Or perhaps I'm just S.O.L.  I dunno, haha.

you should be able to do this in mame.

Start the simpsons, hit tab, go to "controls for this game" section (input/this game only or whatever). Go through Player 3 joystick and buttons and assign them to your P1 controls.

However, you will need to keep the P3 coin-up and P3 start buttons seperate - so you could simply map those to the shifted functioned on the ipac for the P1 coin-up and P1 start buttons.

Then, to play as p3 you simply hold your shift button, use P1's coinup and start, release the shift and you are good to go.

why not play the 'two player' version of the game where it will allow you to select your character...?

Pretty much all 4player beat-em-ups have a 2 player version. Off-hand, I can tell you for sure about Xmen, Simpsons, TMNT, Sunset riders....

Basically, you get to pick which X-man/Turtle/Simpson you want to be.

The only 2 player for TMNT that I could find was TMHT (Teenage mutant HERO Turtles). Its the same as TMNT, except in name. From what I remember, the British government didnt like the idea of kids pretending to be Ninjas due to the popularity of the show; and thus it was changed for that market. Just another stupid "bandwagon" issue that gets pumped up and over hyped (oddly enough, they could say they were ninjas in the show, it was only the title that was changed)

Any Britons wanna add/correct my info? Ive never been to the UK, and only have memories of old news reports from when I was a kid...

I always hated that 'hero' crap when I was a kid too. We weren't stupid.

Depending on which version of MAME you have, there is a '2-player (Oceana)' version, which is the one I play in my cabinet. Oceana releases basically accounted for a collection of areas too small to have their own definable release like US, UK or Japan did.

The roms themselves hardly vary from the US releases.

actually...it's not so much dependent on the mame version as it is just a rom display option...the two player versions are clones of the master...so you'll miss out on them if you have only masters displayed...

i don't know how to pick a clone to display without having _all_ roms showing...it'd be nice to just be able to right click on a master in the list and see the clone options for it and then be able to have the clone listed(eg pac-man instead of puck-man)...
