Huai I Electronics - M820H: Red haze on screen, no blue and powering down...

Hi all,
I'm experiencing some problems with my arcade monitor.  The monitor display has a red tinge to it, and there appears to be no blue in the picture either.  Another annoying occurence has been that after a few minutes, the picture on the screen wavers, shrinks and the monitor appears to power off (can't tell as there is no power light).

I'm using an ArcadeVGA card (Version 1) and breakout cable to connect to the monitor.  I've re-wired the cable twice now (and will probably do it one more time but neatly next time).

I know that I'm asking 3 questions in 1 here...  I sincerely appreciate any help that could be given!

Is this Wei-ya monitor brand new? How long have you had it? Was it working properly before?

could be a crt problem overloading the pwr supply. or a regulation problem in the power supply AND a crt issue.
 not knowing the age/condition of crt , suggest  pull the red drive xistor and see if it still shuts down .
if no shutdown , persue the red drive problem. and also check the blue drive xistor since missing blue....
if still experience shutdown, check components in the pwr sup

First of all, thank you very much Ken and qrz for your replies.  It's greatly appreciated!

Ken:  The monitor is brand new, and I've only had it a month or so.  As for whether it was working properly before, the other night was the first time that I turned it on and managed to get a signal.

qrz: Thank you for the suggestions.  I will look into it over the weekend when I have more time to spend on it.

Remember that this monitor must be powered from an isolation transformer. Never plug this directly to a wall outlet as you'll damage it and whatever else is connected to it.

since unit is new, odds are the crt is ok.... and as Ken has stated , a hot chassis MUST be isolated from ac mains
via an isolation xformer.


remember :

Little update:  Rewired the break out cable so it wasn't so messy...  It helped remove the red haze but there is still no blue and the image flickers (slightly) and it still powers down.

Thank you Ken and qrz for the advice on the isolation transformer.  I've had to use an isolation step-down transformer for the monitor anyway (seeing as we run on 240V here in Australia, and the monitor needs 110V)

For what it's worth, I've included a pic of the monitor output.  Any more advice is sorely needed and greatly appreciated!

according to your last pic you have the red and blue wired back to front,not being funny but i think your wiring is a bit bad

I have no doubt that my wiring skills leave a lot to be desired... 

As you noted grantspain, the red and blue were switched.  That was rectified easily enough.  Thank you for that grantspain.

The image is still flickering and wavering though, and the monitor is still powering down after a few minutes though

being in VK land , ur monitor is upside down ...... sry , couldn't resist. 

is ur xformer the proper rating for the monitor ?    remember, the wattage is a constant regardless of applied voltage .

just looked at the specs.... a xformer rated for 100 - 120W should do fine..

Thank you very much qrz - from the looks of things, that is part of my problem!  I didn't check the wattage on my current step-down transformer.  Will post again when I've sourced a more beefy transformer.

Further update...  and I wish it was good  .

Obtained a step-down transformer rated to 100W.

First time I turned on the monitor, the screen was filled with a white, bright picture.  That displayed for about 15 seconds and then the 3 amp fuse blew.  Now, everytime I turn on the monitor, it blows the 3 amp  fuse.

I'm just about ready to take it into a eletronics repair place and have them look over it as I'm itching to get the cabinet going and play some classics!  Arrghh!

Would anyone please have any further ideas/help?  It would be really appreciated!

you may have bought just a normal stepdown transformer,also did you meter the output voltage
