PC power button sort-of working for shutdown...help?
« on: February 12, 2008, 03:51:39 pm »
Hi,
I am using windows 2000 for my cab. I wired up a button to my PCs power button, and thought I set everything correctly in windows and BIOS. IE : In windows power management options, I have it set to 'power down PC' when I hit the power button. And in BIOS I set to 'soft shut off' on power button. So I expected to see it do a windows shutdown when I press the button. Well, that "sort-of" happens. I press the button, then I get a dialog saying 'shutting down windows'...then about a second later it just kills the PC power before the shutdown happens. When I do a normal shutdown of windows it works fine and doesn't power down until windows shuts down fully. Any ideas as to what I can look at to make this work correctly? I am not loving the checkdisk screen every time I boot up after shutting down this way.

Thanks for any help!!
Rob

I don't think you need to set the BIOS to do anything to make windows do it properly. But normally the bios gives an option for turning off if you hold the power button for 4 seconds. That's what I set it to, so that in a worst case scenario I can rely on that to get the machine turned off.

TheShanMan is correct. The BIOS option is there for OSes that don't have access to power management or for when Windows gets "stuck". Set the BIOS normally and Windows shutdown should work as expected.

You didn't specify what model motherboard you're using.
