Well, contrary to my lamenting, I was able to find time to work on the Ark this weekend (thanks to my wife for running interference with the house guests
).
Anyway, the dang laminate has curled up on me and, as you can see, I had a heck of a time flattening it out for application.
With enough clamps and some strategically placed heavy objects, I was able to get it to lay flat and the wood and laminate were forever wed.
Beware, there is an inherent problem with trimming this stuff. The "gold" is actual metal foil attached to the laminate material. When the router comes into contact with the foil, it is turned into tiny metal bits. These bits have a habit of making their way underneath the router and gouging up the plastic protective film. In a few spots, the film has been scraped away completely. I'll have to remove the film to see if there's any visible damage. Once I notice this was happening, I took extra care and cleaned the router and wood surface often. The problem was greatly reduced.
Here's the nearly completely trimmed piece:
Not very exciting with the film still on. I won't be removing it until both sides have been laminated.
I've been toying with the idea of an Indiana Jones theme for my upright. I'm a huge fan and with the new movie coming out it seems like good timing. But after seeing your project I'm not so sure. Mine might look kinda lame in comparison.
Pshh... If I thought like that I would have never built cabinet number one. Build it. I'd like to see another IJ inspired project.
