Best way to attach cable/wires to MDF
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:16:06 pm »
OK guys, I am looking to start wiring up the mean machine (my CP) this weekend and am looking for any magic tips on how to keep the wiring nice and tidy.

Cable ties are the obvious option but I wonder do you guys attach the ties to the MDF?  Will a simple drop of glue do the job? or will the ties behave themselves without being attach to the wood.

Any advice appreciated...

I use ties and the sticky things that you run the ties through that hold everything down:

(imageshack is blocked from work so I can only guess based on the description)

I've never liked those sticky bobs. They tend to fall off in due time.

I've been using Nylon Cable Clamps, Nail on Cable Clips or if I really wanted to use cable ties, nailed a small penny nail through the sticky pad to ensure they stay.

I used "sticky backs" on both of my cabinets without issues.

This is the underside of the CP from the Tank II I'm restoring.  The sticky bob is still there holding strong after more than 30 years.

I sued those black sticky backs on my driving cabinet and they all came off .... real pain.  If you are going to use them, simply screw it down as well, then this guarantees no problems at all.

I'm sure the quality of the sticky on the back varies between manufacturers.  I used 3M brand.

If you check my project thread or webpage, I use plastic clips that screw into the wood.  They do a great job of cable organization.

This is the underside of the CP from the Tank II I'm restoring.  The sticky bob is still there holding strong after more than 30 years.

And I tore apart cabinets where the sticky bob are all hanging all over the place and I've used sticky bobs where they've fallen off in 1/5 of the time that bob you have there has been sticking.

I'm sure the quality of the sticky on the back varies between manufacturers.  I used 3M brand.

I'm not sure, but I think 3M is all you can get at Home Depot. Or was it Radio Shack? I forget. In any case, I've tried about half a dozen brands from different places and the end result is generally the same. They fall off. Different brands fall off differently than others though. To 3M's credit, their foam turned brittle and crumbled before the sticky portion failed, that was about... fifteen years ago I think. 3M has a goo-like substance now so it might last longer.  :dunno

You can get the type that are designed to have a screw put through them as well. I will be using those.

There is of course an easier way than these fall off sticky backs.......  Just use an ordinary nail on cable clip... Then pass a cable tie through the loop of it.

I prefer plastic p-clips. Mechanical fasteners are the way to go.

Probably the simplest, easiest, and cheapest method is to put a staple where you want to attach the wire(s) to the wood (leave a little bit of the staple sticking up) and that gives you a point to attach the wires to the staple with a wire tie. That's how it was done from the factory in my Dynamo cabinets.

While looking for the mounts I was thinking of I noticed a lot of the sticky ones had screw holes to but they dont look of particularly good quality. I did find these from here though that look good:

Yup that's what I'm using and they work really well.

For my first cab (still in planning stages) I shall be using the might and power of the venerable Duct Tape! (*sighs* yes I am that pathetic about it  ;) )

Then again, I plan on tinkering with my first cab alot to get it "just right", so for me duct tape would be a good idea. Once I get stuff to where I want it, I plan on using those plastic coated staples meant for mounting wiring.

I did the same.  Plastic wire clips at Radio Shack and small wood screws to hold them in.  Worked out great!

OK guys, I am looking to start wiring up the mean machine (my CP) this weekend and am looking for any magic tips on how to keep the wiring nice and tidy.

Another good solution are "anchor ties".  They serve two purposes, as a cable tie and they have a screw hole.

You can get them by the bag at Home Depot.
