Have been calling around for glass quotes...
« on: January 31, 2008, 11:53:17 am »
I didn't think getting the glass the cabinet would be this difficult.  I'm going for 1/4" 26" x 27" #14 greylite tempered, and if you can believe it ... so far the cheapest price is from Washington, shipped via FedEx to Calgary.

Wtf?

One of the glass suppliers here quoted me $146.

How could it possibly be cheaper for me to buy it from the US, ship it via Fedex, and still be cheaper (and faster mind you) than local suppliers.

Is there some sort of sand shortage going on that I'm not aware of?  Sheesh.   :banghead:

Markups.

We talked about this in a thread a few years ago.  Same thing happens around here.  The places you are calling most likely are getting the glass from somewhere else.  Seems to be the closer you live to a big city the more it happens.  By ordering online, you are cutting out the middleman.

yeah - I wouldn't get it tempered unless it's for a cocktail cabinet.

Well how much can it add to the price?  I mean so far the cheaper local supplier prices are the same as the price shipped from Washington, only 3 - 4 weeks longer.

I'd use tempered.  Just not worth the risk and it only adds like $10-$20 more.

If I don't use tempered glass, then I use plexi.

Really?  Glass shops around me consistently charge 4-5x to temper.  I got a piece for my cocktail cabinet tempered for $100+ (can't remember exactly what I paid) and I was quoted $35 for the exact same piece without the tempering...

Well the price for the same glass, tempered from 'One Day Glass' is only $35.

So far the difference between temptered and non-tempered is on par with what was listed above - $20 - $30.

The cost for the glass has ranged almost 200% from the quotes I've received (500% if you count One Day Glass) so I'm not surprised you'd get different prices.

There is going to be some fudge factor for different size glass, but it also depends on where you go and where you live.  I'm not a glass expert and only know about what I have been quoted and bought.

Two-bits sells the tempered to fit a Pac Cocktail for $89.  The last two pieces I had done locally were $25 and $40.  I only had regular glass quote on the last one and it was ~$20 IIRC.

Well so far the lowest price is One Day Glass at $35 (shipped total $83.55), the highest is $146 and the average is around $85.  So I can get it cheaper, and considerably faster by purchasing from a Washington store, and shipping via FedEx to my house.  That really makes zero logical sense.

I don't have anything constructive to tell you about your glass prices, which is a crappy situation, and I feel for you....

But back to the tempering-

Tempered glass is usually expensive as hell. I honestly don't think it is needed for a regular cab. If you are concerned about safety, you could always get some clear, or lightly tinted window tint on it. That way, if someone goes nuts and breaks it, it's not going to shatter into big dangerous chunks. The tint will keep it together, and hopefully nobody will get cut.

Tempered glass is good for taking blunt force, but force in a relatively wide area, could cause it to explode. Is that "widearea" as big as a fist? That I do not know. One thing I do know, is I'd much rather clean up normal glass than tempered glass!

(I used to be huge into fish tanks, and have drilled tons of holes, and have run into my fair share of tempered glass problems)

Go with tempered (or plexi) ... how much are YOUR fingers, wrists and forearms worth ?

Avrus -- head over to CGCC and post there. There are a couple of Albertans who may be able to point you in the right direction.

I feel your pain. Glass over here in Europe has risen over the last few years. I was told it was due to the closing of some large plants. This is probably due to China.

I would suggest going with tempered. Having smoked glass adds a fair bit of cost to it, so you could have it clear and apply some tint.

After exhausting quotes with 9 different shops I pulled the trigger with Onedayglass.  They had the best price (even after shipping) and the best delivery time.  So end of the next week I'll have a sweet piece of glass.

Oh wait, you said glass...  ::)

Anyways, before going into the whole "I am going to make my own cab" I had NO idea how much simple glass cost! Its incredible! For my first cab, I will prolly forgo glass, unless it urks me too much, then I may have to spring for it... :<

I used Speedy for custom cut 5mm grey tempered - 26 x 27 15/16.

Price in Kamloops, BC - $50 plus tax.  Took about 10 days as glass comes out of Vancouver.

Wow that's bizarre.  Speedy's one that was in the 140+ mark.  So was Crystal Glass.

Ah well, once again ordering from the US provides the cheapest alternative.

My cocktail cab has a piece on it that is easily larger than what you are looking to order... with rounded edges... but CLEAR,  not smoked...and I paid less than $30.00 for it locally.   I am not sure if the tinting is what is making your quote so big?

Here's the glass:

It's Calgary.  We're used to prices being ridiculous.  Case in point, dinner at the Cheesecake Cafe for two now runs $70 - $80.
