Comments on my cab plans please
« on: May 18, 2003, 12:00:58 am »
Hi all. I've just had my cabinet delivered. It cost me NZ$60 delivered ( that's about US$35 ). It is in great condition with coin mech, smoked bezel and fully operational Street Fighter control panel.

I am planning on using ArcadeVGA card with a 20" arcade monitor, IPac4 encoder and PC 600MHz, 64Mb Ram and 10 Gb hard drive.
I can get other control panels ( all metal ) from the guy a got the cabinet off. I'll probably get a 4 way 1 player panel and a Defender panel. I will not be adding a trackball or spinner.

I would really like to hear your comments and/or suggestions as I am very new to this. Please feel completely free to say anything ( I really want to get this right ). I will post pics of my progress soon.

Whoa there tiger....it's the middle of the night in the rest of the world.  People don't generally get out of bed just to respond to posts on a message board.  You're first post was at midnight New York time, which would be something like six in the morning in London, or something.

That said, why an I-PAC 4?  It sounds like you just have a 2-player panel.  Even if you have a dedicated 4-way stick on there you can wire it to the same spot on the I-PAC as the 1-player 8-way stick since they won't both be used at the same time.  This is, in fact, generally preferrable as it means you can use either stick to control 4-way games.  It makes it easier for guests to figure it out since the average person doesn't know what type of controller should be used with different games.

Anyway the rest sounds fine.  That computer will play the majority of games (at least 80% I'd say) in Mame full speed, but there are a few that you would want a faster PC for.  The hard disk is also too small to put a set of laserdisc games on like Dragon's Lair, but there are only about 10 of those games in all and you still have a couple thousand that will work just fine in Mame.

And drink less caffein.

Wow that's good going. May I enquire where you got it from? I'm from N.Z myself and if I knew you could get something that cheap I might of thought twice about building a cabinet. Just out of interest, does this company deal in parts also? I'm after a coin mech myself.

Sorry I always forget about the time zone thing.

Hey kiwi. If you are interested, the company I deal with is coin cascade in Christchurch ( I am in Hamilton ). They have reps in North and South island. If you call them or go to their website www.coincascade.co.nz they will give you the contact number for your local rep ( by local I mean there are two reps for the whole of the North Island lol ).

Good luck.

Thanks for everyones comments so far  :)

Hey Rom I rang the coin cascade guy last night to find out about getting an arcade monitor and another control panel. He is going to give me a monitor, two control panels ( a 4 way one player and a defender panel ) to go with my street fighter panel all the wiring and power pack etc for NZ$200! That's about US$100! Unbelievable. Now I just need my ArcadeVGA card and IPAc 4 and my PC lol.
