cp height
« on: January 22, 2008, 02:39:03 pm »
I searched around and didn't find any answers

Is there a generic cp height

or at least a comfort zone ?

Thanks,

elbow height is a pretty good estimate.

How tall are you?

So many variations.
The difference between a Donkey Kong and a Defender is huge!

If I custom build a cab then I aim for round 1 meter.

The best thing to do is mock it up, and test it.
My guess would be around 36-37" at the front, and 37-38" at the back.

The most important factor to me is not the height, but rather the angle of the CP.
I've played a few people's home-builts that had the CP angled too sharply.
On those, your wrists have to bend too far, or you have to lean over too far, to make them comfortable while playing.

I would say 38" front, 40" back.  ;D

I did two things to come up with a distance from the floor to the top height of my control panel.

1) I stood there and pretended to hold a joystick and then measured the distance from the floor to the bottom of my forearms.   Basically, when playing I wanted my forearms to be resting on the control panel comfortably while holding a joystick.  hope that makes sense.

2) I then sat on a stool and I measured the distance from the floor to the top of my thighs and then added 2 inches.   This will guarantee the player can sit on a stool and be able to slide their knees under the control panel a bit without having to lean into the controls instead.

This kind of determined the height requirements.  Of course the difference between the measurements (ie (1) - (2) = X ) indicates the thickness of the control panel box.  Make sure you have enough room in the box to house all your controls of course.

I just used (1) and (2) as a very good indicator of where I wanted the control panel box to be located....

I would go with a playing surface which is about level with your forearms at 90 degrees from your upper arm (elbow height), give or take a bit. I've found this to be between 32-38 inches for most people. Mine is at 36" at the front, with a 2" slope up to the rear of the panel (about 8" deep).

I have mine at 40" to the base of the joysticks.  It has about a 2" slope so probably in the 39" to 41" range.

This is playable by my 5'6" girlfriend and just fine for me, 6'6".

I'm 5'10", and when doing my measurements I figured out that 42" to the top back of the CP would work fine.  I plan on sloping it down to 40" at the very front.  This allows me to stand and play comfortably as well as sit on a stool and play comfortably.

It sounds crazy, but do you knopw what a great idea would be?  To visit your local arcade or Dave and Busters and take measuring tape with you.  Seriously.  Each manufacturer will have a different height and you can try them all to see what the best fit is.  Once you like one, measure it!

Great idea Delusional !!    ;D

Taking the trusty measuring tape with you down the shops (or in this instance, the arcade), is a tried and trusted technique.
