feedback on cp-overlay/marquee
« on: January 20, 2008, 07:25:08 pm »
Hi there,

altough my photoshop skills are not that impressive. I tried to do a descent attempt to make a cp overlay and matching marquee to match the sizes mentioned in the project arcade book example cabinet.
Perhaps someone would be willing to comment/critisize my work. Anything from layout, colour spacing etc. is very welcome. Would save me a lot of frustration finding out the hard way after printing.

The theme is based on a mix between my home town of Rotterdam mixed with Space harrier.

thanks
Michael

I think thats pretty cool! Great idea. Not sure about the colours though. I think you should rethink the button and joystick decals. Your character art is a bit small and pixellated. It wont look good printed. Try using vector based images. Personally I would have gone with "ROTTERDAM NATION" a nice throughback to ridge racer! My £0.02

thanks. those are some helpfull comments.
As for the colour: it should be something to match my red happ buttons. (any idea which rgb colour code i should take?) Apart from that i am open for anything. Looking at your great artwork you must have some suggestions  ;D

About the button/joystick decals. The simple holes on the art are just the drilling holes so they wont be vissible. If you are talking about the 'oval circle' around the group of buttons: i am having some doubts about that too. Somehow it seems a bit 'off' from the rest of the design, although i am not sure what exactly it is i dont like about it.

About the character art: i tried to find space harrier art with the biggest resolution i could find, so i ended up cutting these out of a arcade flyer on the web. The pitures here are rescaled ofcourse, and when i took a look at the art after pressing: view -> printing size  it looked pretty ok. But vector images would be even better off course. Would there be any space harrier vector images available? These pictures here seem quite hard aka impossibe for a noob like me to vectorize.

About the name: totally agree. much better

thankyou!
Michael

your RGB code is about R:158 G:31 B:40
For the background I would use a checker grid but tilt it at an angle to give that "space harrier" feel. If you are dead set on the controll surrounds do it with a neon glow a couple of shades ricker than the background colour. Fraid your outta luck with the vectored characters I cant seem to find any. I could do them for you a little more upto date than the originals. I think you should use the space harrier font for your logo and tilt it to an opposing angle from the background. It would give your panel 4 distinct fields of vision which would look AWESOME!!

thanks for all the advise. basicly all suggestions sound like great improvements, so i am gonna work on those and keep you posted  ;)

if you could help me a little with the characters, that would be really awesome. but if its too time consuming, dont feel obligated. would you be needing the pictures i used for that?

cheers!
Michael

made some minor changes to the two examples posted earlier.

tried to vectorize the character art with some online program. I think i turned out quite well. Lost some of the detail but the pictures look pretty sharp now (might look pixelated in the examples, but try pressing right mouse button-> view image).

i am not sure about the spacing and placement of the buttons on the panel. And the room i left between the joysticks and the trackball. Perhaps someone would be able to tell me if this is alright. CP might be up for improvement but i am not sure anymore how. I am pretty content, so i might be leaving it like it is.

oh almost forgot to thank you waveryder. very constructive feedback so far! and thankyou for the compliment concidering my poor drawing/photoshop skills.

/Michael

Miguelsluma and I are creating the sideart for his cab based upon his rotterdam nation artwork. Space Harrier is pretty hard to find resources forso with some tooing and frowing we've decided to go for something in the space harrier vain but a little more BubbleGum in style ;)

First we agreed on a sketched idea.

Next up, I redrew the sketch and cleaned it up and produced some working lineart. Once I had a good quality lineart I dropped the whole thing into illustrator and redrew it to get a good quality vectored outline. Miguelsluma wants it big so the only way to secure that is to produce the vectored base at the resolution he wanted. Each element was drawn seperately and put together at 40 X 60 cm in Pshop
Next Up the flats

Next up, I painted in the flats with a hard colouring brush. Each element has 2 multiply layers for the basic colouring and one layer for detailing and special effect. Good quality flats are vital when your painting in PShop, miss something and you right back to the begining! The flats colours dont have to neccessarily reflect the colours of the final piece they are just a way of blocking in your main selections. Next Up painting Harrier Girl  ;D

Harrier Girl has been painted using a variety of brushes, most important of these was the hair brush. She's airbrushed to give her that curved look as it will look better on the side of the cab that way. First one done....Phew! Lunchtime now and im hungry.
Next Up Dragon Boss.

Anyone have any screens of the dragon boss from space harrier, having some colour matching issues.

Just the some more detailing on the dragon. The dragons kicking ---my bottom--- at the moment as it is effected by 3 light sources and I can only actually see 2 of em!

Miguelsluma, can you send me your logo as a transparent PSD so I can put it on the side art.

here is my 'as good as finished' cab with the artwork on it, as promised!

might be printing the marquee again in the near future. I made a huge miscalculation when making it, so i had to sacrifice a big part of the top.

apart from that, I am just very proud, concidering i had seriously never done anything more than drilling a hole for hanging a painting before i started this.

That is friggin awesome! The side-art is quite nice too ;) That control Panel artwork came out amazing Miguelsluma, did you get done locally or go to MMarquees? You should put this bad boy on "project anouncments", you gotta show people what you did with "the saints" book. The whole theme is great and the red T-mold sets it off really well. I would definetly get the Marquee re-done though you gotta have the whole rotterdam skyline.

Thanks for the compliments! Offcourse I love the side art on there! ;)
I got all the printing done at Mamemarquees. The shipping from the states to the Netherlands was actually not that bad. Took way shorter than bigger packages with joysticks, buttons etc.

I will take my picture collection to the project announcments next week when i have a bit more time. Ill try to describe and recollect  the process and problems i came across in my mind this week so i can put it all on paper the next :D

cheers!
