Make your cab a TIVO..... if ya want.
« on: January 17, 2008, 10:31:11 pm »
I have GBPVR running on a spare computer and with a 20 dollar video capture card made my own TIVO or DVR for the basement TV. Works very well, not perfect but really good, and price is right free, unlike paid subcription services.

Mame and other emulators support via plugin here at the wiki
http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Plugin/GameZone

If you have a coax cable close you could turn your cab into a tivo.

How does the remote work?  Do you point it at the video card or a sensor or possibly wifi?

I am using vnc from my laptop to control everything, from anywhere in the house. (My wife thinks I'm nuts.)

Remote control versions of the video capture card were more costly than what I bought, so I can't comment on it.
I believe that there is a sensor that connects to the capture card that sits out (RF or IR?).

Kids like to watch recorded reruns of AFV

I enjoy watching the recorded games of when the Bears beat the Packers twice this year. Think I'll watch that again this Sunday..... ;D

that is so cool...is there any thing they will not do...

question:

what size of hard drive do you need?

i have a video capture card that i bought to transfered some home movies but never did it as the graffics were terrible, my hard drive had to be huged just to get 2 hours of movies...i mean huge..250 gig to make it worth while

and if i understand the card will take the picture in from your cables or what ever is your source..but then how to you output to your tv?

then can you record more then 1 show at a time?

cheers,

Hoopz

What capture card?  It probably has settings for what format to store the video as.  mpeg2, avi etc.  Some are much larger/smaller than others.

How does the software tell the satellite receiver (for example)  to change the channel when record time arrives?  Does the pc tv tuner card have some kind of IR transmitters that controls the receiver?

The tuner card is in the computer. It's controlled through the drivers.

I know that.  But what I'm saying is that you don't want to have to manually set your sat receiver on the correct channel every time a recording is to take place.  Apparently the software is able to automatically change the channel with the right hardware.  I'm thinking its some kind of IR transmitter.

Oh sorry, misread your question  :-[

OK, retry.

If you have an external tuner, (a cable or satellite receiver), you can let GB-PVR change channels for you by connecting a Channel Changer or IR-blaster to your PC. There are a couple of different devices available that work with GB-PVR.

This recorder plugin allows use of the Technisat SkyStar2 DVB-S card with GB-PVR. It will allow you to record and watch live TV (in timeshift mode only). No automatic transponder scanning is available yet, so channel tuning data must be entered manually.

Ahhh, thanks patrickl.  Also found a tuner card that has an ir blaster built in, but its a little pricey:

Yeah, that one is mentioned in the first wiki page (about Channel Changers) so it should work with GBPVR
