Oscar USB mouse interface question
« on: May 16, 2003, 10:59:35 am »
Hi,
does Oscar USB mouse interface works as PS/2 mouse if I use a converter to do so ?
I use Mame pure DOS and since I cannot use a USB device, I was wondering whether order one of this interfaces or hack a PS/2 mouse.

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

I've asked Oscar this in the past and the answer is NO... you cannot use that particular mouse with a PS/2 converter.

re: USB and pure dos... sometimes you can use USB Mice and/or USB keyboards in DOS if your mobo supports it on a low level... not sure if that works for MAME and haven't done it myself (well i've used a USB keyboard in pure dos with mame before no problem, but not a mouse)

I have an oscar pre-hacked usb mouse and it's nifty.

I've also hacked a ps/2 mouse before and it wasn't that big of a deal (i.e. don't be afraid to DIY with a 99 cent mouse, some desoldering braid and wire/solder)

Rampy is correct, it does not work with a simple passive converter.  Perhaps there are active converters for doing this?  I know you can get active converters for going PS/2 ---> USB, but I'm not sure about the other way around.

Thanks for the replies,
I have PS/2 mouse to hack, which I can try to mount directly. But OSCAR's optic board is easy to use, hence I though of using it with his USB interface.
I'll surely do so when I upgrade my machine to use windows. I'll have to work with PS/2 for now
