Turnarcades/Mamewah announcement
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:00:56 am »
Major announcement about Turnarcades products!

I'm proud to announce a major addition to the Turnarcades product line. I have recently been in talks about improving the Turnarcades products by getting software developers and some important business partners on board. The first of these to announce is with regards to forum regular Minwah who most of you should know...

As of February 2008, all Turnarcades arcade machines and projects will (where a PC is installed) feature the ever-popular arcade menu/frontend system MAMEWAH! Steve (Minwah) and myself have made an agreement that means all Turnarcades arcade machines will come pre-installed with a Turnarcades-skinned setup of MAMEWAH pre-installed. The software setup will completely configured for use with the arcade controls installed on each machine, and will have pre-configured skins and initialisation files for a selection of major platform emulators, Namely Arcade (MAME), SNES, NES, Gameboy (inc. GB Colour), Megadrive (Genesis), Master System, Game Gear, Atari 2600, 32X, Atari Lynx, Neo-Geo Pocket and PC Engine (TurboGrafx 16). Further platforms may be added (eg N64, Mega CD etc.) depending on requirements and system specification.

This is our first step to creating the closest thing to an all-in emuation cabinet that can be had in the UK and Europe. We will hopefully soon be sorting out an agreement with exporters (to get us into the US for a reasonable price), parts manufacturers (to reduce our overheads), CNC manufacturers (to create non-customised, standardised flat-pack machines), and maybe even one or two game companies (to get a legitimate game line-up pre-installed on licence).

I will let you know when we have some more info. Until then, check out the Turnarcades range with this link;

Mamewah is a great program ONLY if you pre-configure it for folks.  Configuration of MAMEWAH is the single biggest pain in the ass I encountered when I build my MAME cabinets (first one...2nd one was a breeze once you know what you are doing).

Do you know if Minwah plans on actually UPDATING Mamewah?  It's been ALMOST a year now.

It's for that reason that the Turnarcades installation will include pre-configured initialisation files. Mamewah was a difficult program to set p at first, but once I got to grips with it I have found it to be a reliable front-end. By offering it pre-configured, it takes the sweat out of setting up a front-end (if you're a total novice) and shows what the program is capable of visually. It also provides a good starting point for people wishing to customise and add their own game collections and emulators to the mix. Having a set of viewable working .ini files helps people to make their own.

I have no idea about updates, as the version I use is stable enough to work in the way I have set it up. I have no requirements to add bells and whistles as standard, as that takes out the fun of modding it yourself.

There is a pre-configured mamewah setup called Auto-Mamewah by a chap called marciantos, but it's all in Spanish and as mamewah relies on preserving file-paths, it can be a pain to re-name things to make sense and do alterations yourself.

I cannot just offer it on general re-sale without a cabinet installation, however I can supply it with one of our pre-cut panel kits; starting at £80 for a Bar-Top bare-panel kit.

The last I heard from the Hippy was he was re-designing the backend.....

Mind you that may have been in relation to his new found love......

Gertrude teh goat.............

You'd think he would have known better after the last incident/court case....

Blimey is it that long! :o Is it just me or does time go quicker the older you get??

Anyway, yes I am still working on it, but for the moment it is going very slowly due to other things going on.  The backend Orc refers to is not Gertrude's (got bored of her), but a database driven system which if all goes well I am hoping will make development in the future much easier (albeit a PITA to move everything over).  By easier I mean a) easier to alter fields etc. and b) easier for users to do creative things with the data rather than farting around with my annoying LST files.  Anyway so far I have the basics working wel but stuff like filtered lists etc. need to be sorted.

Sorry to hijack the thread, all the best to Turnarcades!

Thanks Minwah, I guessed it would spark a few questions about program progression. Would be interested to know myself if anything comes up which might be handy to implement.

I will be posting pics of my modified skins in the next few weeks so watch this thread.
