Joystick mounting
« on: January 10, 2008, 08:17:44 am »
Hi this is my first post here so hi to all

I got my jamma arcade a few months back and i have more or less converted it to a mame machine now its all running but still needs touching up a bit,  Ive got one controller that is ok but the other the spring has snapped and seems to struggle with diagonals the sticks are screwed similar to a button, then the bottom with microswitch`s on  twists on but at the moment i cant see any with the same design they all seem to be bolted through the top can anybody help or is this a obsolete thing now the control panel is metal but may have to be changed because its a 2 player 3 button and i want a few more buttons  but the layout are too close to eachother.

and my second question is there anywhere in  glen lakes Florida to get arcade parts my folks are holiday out there and asked if i wanted anything.

Thanks
DiGi

Welcome, DiGi.

I think that some pictures of your problem stick and panel might help (you can post pictures by using the Additional Options link below the textbox when you are posting). Then folks can see exactly what you are facing (e.g. what kind of stick it is, what your control panel is) and respond accordingly.

It sound like you may have a Happ Universal stick, but I'd need to see to be sure.

thanks for the reply i didn't quite give enough information I'm from England the cab i believe is about late 80`s  when i got it it had no board so i thought id strip it down for a mame/jukebox machine its now fitted with a elo touchscreen but i couldn't get the touch part to work with a serial cable i made  although the inboard diagnostics recognises the touch  ::)

anyhow my joystick looks the similar to the happ maybe a early one ?.

Control Panel is about 15cm by 52 cm there`s enough room to get 6 buttons player one but keeping the same space i think id bang hands with player 2 on the joystick only other thing is to have 2 vertical rows of 3 which i think will just fit as well for player 2 but i dont think i will like it that way  and the 2 metal screws are the lock downs for the control panel but i presume you knew that . ;D

The microswitches Ive changed a few around and the one with the red button is a new one my local electrical shop only had 2 instock but it still seems to struggle with the new button sometimes the spring is under the nut but i presume that was just to pull the handle back down when lifted ?

Cheers

Sorry, DiGi, I don't know that stick at all ... perhaps some of the European folks (cough ... Level42 ?) might have some info.

Just been looking closely at your joystick setup with the new microswitch. Seems to me that the original switch levers are all bent a little and your new one looks totally straight. Looks like the stick has to travel a little more before actuating your new microswitch that it does for any of the others.  :dunno

I also noticed that...

But if you look the new switch is wider, look at the corners closet the centre, the corners on the original switches just touch the outer circle whilst the new switch touches the inner....

The arm is touching the actuator the same as the other switches but I think the "feel" would be different in that direction. I think sometimes if you cannot get EXACTLY the same switch it is better to replace all four so you get a consistant feel in all directions.

Onto the Joystick itself I have never come across one like that before...

At first glance it looked like the Suzo 500, until I saw the spindle-screw bottom section. This is similar to the top-mount E-stik from Ultimarc, and is designed to go through a narrower hole and have a baseplate to mask the hole, unlike the 'plastic disc' floating around the bottom of many joysticks. You may do well to get the Suzo 500's as a replacement, listed as the 'Euro-stick' on Ultimarc.

Alternatively, if you want more buttons you may do well to rip out the metal control panel section and build one from wood with a lexan overlay or something - you can drill your own layout much more easily and have your choice of joysticks.

It might possibly be one of these:

I've only once seen an Alberici joystick in an arcade, and it was possibly the worst joystick I've ever tried. If they are Alberici Sticks then I'd definitely replace them. Suzo 500s would be a good choice, they have a great feel but they're a little ugly.

Thanks for all the reply`s  folks sorry it took a while get back to you

Gimme' some details on the screen. I have a few here and may have the proper cable info to get the touchscreen working.

the screen is a elo ET1987C-4SWA-1 i cant remember the model of the controller in it and at the moment  would be bit of a pain to try and get to it but any help on pin config for the lead would be great.

yeah i bent some of them myself because  i got all player one working fine from a mix of both joysticks when i got it but i had one that didn't seem to want to work, when  i bought some replacements they only had 2 in stock it feels alot stiffer than the others but i presumed they shouldn't have needed to be bent originally and that getting 4 new ones I'm going to have to bend into shape ? or would it be better to try and make the stick wider ?.

It not too bad to use on the player 1 ;D  nobody wants be player 2 at the moment  ::) I'm just working out whats a good replacements for them are but at the moment I'm just happy it pretty playable to start with, as mentioned by samshaw946 it may be a better option to redo the control panel from scratch at a later date from wood.

Cheers
