Donkey Kong/nintendo joystiq question

I have an original nintendo joy for my DK cab.  I took it out cleaned all the rust off and want to put the replacement joystiq guard I got for it underneath the control panel as I am told that's where it is supposed to be.  My only problem is I am not sure how to get it on.  I got the ball top off with an L-wrench and it semi looks like the joystiq screws off in two parts where the stick has what looks like some kind of joint.  Is this true?  What do you guys recommend?  I attacked a STOCK pic of the joystiq I found.

You need to remove the E-clip from the bottom of the shaft. After you do that, it will be self-explanatory.

However, you say you removed the balltop. If so, that should be enough. Just slide the plastic pieces down over the top of the shaft and put the balltop back on.

I was over at Ito's house the other day and we did remove the e-clip on the bottom, which didn't really do anything.  The joystick did not come apart.  I'm thinking that the rust possibly fused the parts together.  He has since soaked it (I think) in CLR to remove the rust.  Ito, can you confirm?

Anyone have a diagram or schematic out there with how the joystick comes apart?  (I've attached something similar to this post as an example).

Almost any Nintendo Arcade Manual, including DK, has the diagram for the joystick.

I was over at Ito's house the other day and we did remove the e-clip on the bottom, which didn't really do anything.  The joystick did not come apart.  I'm thinking that the rust possibly fused the parts together.  He has since soaked it (I think) in CLR to remove the rust.  Ito, can you confirm?

If he has the balltop off then that's all he needs to do in order to slide the plastic plate and dust washer down over the shaft.

If you removed the E-clip and nothing happened, then it must have some severe rust going on. Normally when you remove the E-clip, the lower spring retainer immediately pushes off the shaft on it's own due to spring pressure being released. At that point the shaft will freely pull out from the base with the upper spring retainer and the spring itself simply falling on the table.

In other words, once the E-clip is removed, it should just fall apart.

If you do get it apart, clean it thoroughly with WD40 or something, especially the pivot bearing and its socket. Spray it with the WD40 or whatever and let it soak and then get in the socket with a toothbrush or pipe cleaner or whatever to get all the gunk out of there. When you have everything cleaned and dry, lubricate the pivot bearing and socket with something light, like machine oil or silicone spray. If you use a heavy grease it will make the joystick movement feel glitchy, and slow to return to center.

Then just pull the joystick shaft out of the base, or tip it upside down and it will fall out, assuming it is not seized from rust.

That amber plastic cylinder doesn't come off? I would think it would but I don't know for sure because none of my Nintendo joysticks have the removable balltop like yours does (they were made both ways).

That clear dustwasher disk you bought is the type that came on Donkey Kong machines (others?), and was installed above the CPO.

  Ok cool. I will put it there.  Last night Delusional29 and I took a really close look at the stick  and took a hammer to it and guesss what, the thing was indeed rusted together, even after soaking it in CLR.  So I am good now, thanks for your help guys.  Actually anyone know where I can get the black joystick guard that went underneath the CPO??

The black one would work, but as you stated, the hole is much larger.  You could make your own.  It basically is there to keep dust out of the joystick and make the hole look cleaner.

You mean the large rectangular plastic piece from the picture I posted? That was a Punch-Out joystick, which is used with a metal control panel. I'm not so sure that Donkey Kong (wooden control panel) ever had that piece in the first place. From the parts drawing that DeLuSioNal29 posted, it doesn't appear so. Someone here who has an original DK machine could say for sure.

yeah I am looking for what I guess is part 23-14 in this schematic, it's like a little black guard that goes under the control panel.  I attached the full schematic, see below.  I believe it's called a black Joystiq disc.  It's the only part I am missing.

I'm not sure what the function of that part is. The manual calls it a "blind plate", whatever that it. It looks like a washer of some sort. Anyway, according to the schematic, it doesn't go under the control panel, but rather, between the top of the control panel and the plexi control panel overlay. I would assume it is just an extra dust washer, which can move freely because of the recess created by the thickness of the metal of the mounting plate (01-39).

It is obviously completely unnecessary for the joystick to function. In fact, if it is a dust washer (I don't see what else it could be), it is also redundant, given that there is already the larger clear dust washer that sits on top of the control panel and overlay.

I don't know where you would get a Nintendo one, but I would think that a black plastic dust washer from pretty much any joystick would work.

every dk i have either had or seen only has one of the dustwashers or no dustwasher. i have never seen any dk that had both. since you have the top one i dont see why you would need or want the botton one.

DK came with 2, one black one under the CPO and the clear one above the CPO.
