Did it come with any drivers?  That is your problem.

If the Windows XP gamepad doesn't see the joystick, then nothing will until you get a good driver for it.

Yes it came with a driver disk and when I put that in it loaded up and took me to the xp gamepad configuration it classes the game pad as a 16 button 4 axis. the driver disk i used is not recognised i went into the device manager to load it but it states that the driver does not match the device??

I never could get that one to work properly with a N64 controller.  I think the only thing that works is an Adaptoid.  But I they are hard to find now.  LMK if you have any success.

Think im gonna give up on this one as iv tried everything. Does anyone own one of these adaptoids? I would very much like your reviews on it and if you have had any issues with them as I want to buy 2 of them instead of this crap I currently have.

Do they work as full analogue sticks in Project 64 ??

Anyone tried them ??

As of last week, they started taking pre-orders to ship around mid-May for Adaptoids.  $36 each for preordering, and I bet they don't last long (although I just placed an order for 2, so they are still available!)

I just put in an order for two as well.  It looks like my cabinet might get an overhaul after all.
