Z axis in MAME,... problems.
« on: January 05, 2008, 11:18:06 pm »
Hey,

I've searched for this (really I have) and have not been able to find an answer, so I thought I'd bother you all with this simple question.

I just got my turbotwist spinner, and have been trying it out. It's very nice and I am impressed by it so far, but I am not able to use the Z axis in MAME. (It does work in windows.)

My MAME version is older, .61b, so first of all is Z axis something that was added later? If so, is there a way I can get it in this older version? MAME does not recognize my mousewheel either, btw.

I need to try to get this working on the Z axis, because I have the trackball cable that is using X and Y for that.

Thanks.

yeah but did you search under 'should i return my turbotwist 2'
obviously not ;)

you'll have to wait for randy for a solution.
in the meantime map your spinner to another axis (so you can confirm its working i presume), post the result and Randy will take it from there no doubt.
got COLOR codes from projects, post them here

add stuff to the uk wiki section

I have a TT spinner on Z and it's fine for me (with sensitivities down around 1%-5% for most games).

Your guess was right: sounds like other axes were available only from 0.84u4 (so 0.85 compiled).

- The configuration of ports has changed a bit now as well. You can now map
any analog axis to an analog port in the standard input UI. There are now
three entries per analog port. The first entry is the analog mapping. The
second and third control the digital decrementing and incrementing
sequences. To map an analog axis, just hit ENTER and then move the axis
in question by a large amount. [Aaron Giles]

It's probably a pretty extensive patch if you could isolate it and get it to work with .61, so maybe look at upgrading to .85, or running two versions and getting your front-end to use a later version for spinner games, if it supports that?

And btw - you can confirm the spinner works on Z axis without changing it to another by scrolling a web page etc.

Thanks for the responses.

Yea, I did see that first one, but it was talking more about backspin issues rather than z-axis stuff.

The spinner definitely works on all XYZ axis (in Windows), just that MAME isn't recognizing my Z axis. putting it on X or Y works great. Then I can't hook up the trackball though.

I think my solution is going to be a switch so I can toggle between the trackball and spinner to share the X axis.  I don't even mind if they are both active on X since I doubt I will be bumping the wrong one while playing. Any problems with this? Any other ideas?

Hmmmm,... just tried a newer version of MAME and still no Z axis. (mouse wheel isn't reading either.) I did see another post that was mentioning Z axis support being added in .84, so I guess that is the big issue for me.
