Getting acrylic sheet
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:17:35 pm »
Anyone know where I can get a simple sheet of acrylic?
    Size = 23" * 14" (58.5cm * 35.5cm) and approx 1/4" (5mm) thick
    I live in London UK

Can I get it with the edges beveled?

Is it easy stuff to drill?

Could I bevel it?

Does it scratch easy? It's going over the screen area on my cocktail cab. I don't think I can use hardened glass as I want to drill through it to fix it to the cab (http://www.bikesandkites.com/tn_mame2_copper_done1.jpg).

Many thanks

Mike

acrylic would scratch up, you can polish it out with brasso though, believe it or not, well you can with perspex anyway.
im sure you could get the glass drilled( with a diamond bit?), look at mirrors etc they often have fixing holes, phone a glass place and ask.

i believe a router is the way for cutting, drilling, shaping the acrylic
as for where to get it, i know it sounds obvious but have you googled, if you get no luck i'll ask some creative types i know in the smoke

Acrylic or prspex is fine for the job. Ebay has loads of custom-cutting services who will laser-cut a piece to your exact dimensions, create radiused corners if necessary, and do various effects and thicknesses.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

Maybe your googling is better than mine but all I could find were companies dealing in industrial quantities of the stuff. I just tried ebay (uk) and searched for "acrylic sheet" but none of the companies offered either cutting or beveling.

I've never dealt with acrylic before and suspect I'll make a mess of it - I'd much rather buy it prepared.

These guys have done loads for me and it is always well packaged:

plasticonline@btinternet.com

Not sure of their website, but just e-mail your size requirements, thickness and finish (smoked/non-smoked) and they will return a price for you. Give them a couple of days - they don't live on their e-mails like we do!

Average price is around £8 and p+p is about £8 for a 2'x2', 4mm thick sheet of clear perspex, but this can vary depending on stock.
