Sound effects on game startup etc
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:07:59 pm »
I'd like to add a sound effect when a game begins (something like "prepare to die sucker" in some alien voice). I'm using mame and AtomicFE as the front end. Any ideas how it's done?

Any good sources for similar sound effects

I'm not sure how it works with AtomicFE, but I use Maximus Arcade and when you select a game, it makes a clicking sound when you press the button to enter it.  You can replace that sound with whatever mp3 or wave file you want.

I'm sure AtomicFE will work the same way.  But I am not familiar with that FE.

AtomicFEs default layout has what your looking for (and I belive what your referencing)- it says 'Prepare for battle!'

If you go into AtomicFe\layout\default folder you can change the sound to whatever you want (I think its called intro.wav).  You can then rename your sound clip to what the default layout calls it so the layout knows to pull your specific sound... or just use AFEs layout editor to redo your layout and incorporate a new sound.

MALA will do it also...Mine says "Destroy the humanoid" when you start and "Chicken fight like a robot" when you exit the game.

Here's a question, maybe along these lines, maybe not:

How would one go about having sound effects play on the start up *of the cabinet itself*? (ie: as soon as you turn it on, and before the OS loads)?
I've been thinking I'd like to have a power-up sound when I turn on the cabinet. Are there any quick and dirty external "sound devices" one could use?

Not sure on that...I have mine saying "coin detected in pocket" on WIndows start, but I'm not sure how you would make it do it before the OS loads.
